First impressions were great - lovely building with fab lounge and bar area.
The spa was not working -it seems that it never has been according to reviews! Our room was small - we payed for a deluxe one so expected it to be bigger! The bathroom was not very nice -a bit grubby and tired, with a small bath and shower over it. The bedroom had lovely old furnishings - but doors needed fixing and the wardrobe had the most riddiculous hangers inside -was impossible to hang anything in there. TV had terrible reception and half of the lightbulbs in the room needed replacing. The hot water kept dying right in the middle of my shower - not good when you are covered in shampoo! The fire alarm went off early on the Sunday morning and went on for about 10 minutes - waking everyone in the whole hotel! (some poor people ended up standing outside in very little clothing!) There was also an extractor chimney on the wall outside our room which kept making the most awful banging and clanging noise.
Our bed was not made after the first night of our stay - the duvet was just pulled over the bed. The sheets also had some mysterious stains on them...and were not of very good quality. The room was not service properly, towels and toiletries were not replaced or even tidied.
On the plus side - breakfast was really superb, one of the best I have tasted. Great bacon and lovely black pudding! We wanted to eat that night- but no bar menu -no food service which was advertised on thier website. The staff were very nice and very helpful.

Despite all of the little niggles - I did actually really like the feeling of this place. We would stay again. I do think that will a little more TLC Marmadukes could be really excellent. I hope the owners realise this and act upon comments placed on trip advisor. It really could be so special!

Would highly recommend this hotel . My Husband and I often spend a night away in York and over the years have stayed in a multitude of hotels. Marmaduke's stands out as a quirky building with great furnishings , however the reason this stay stands out is the friendliness and professional approach of every member of staff we encountered. Only wish we could have stayed longer but will certainly return.

Myself and my partner decided to stay away last minute and came across Marmadukes when searching the net! We stayed in one of the four poster rooms.. Everything was just as described! Beautiful Victorian features throughout the hotel. Service was first class and the breakfast is not to be missed! Loved our stay there and would definatly stay again!! A+++

I was tempted to give this hotel a 3 as it's not that bad however, I would not recommend it. On arrival we noticed a sign saying the hot tub was out of order. This was annoying as it was one of the reasons we booked into that hotel over another one and we were looking forward to it after a long journey. I think they should tell you this when you book the room as I probably wouldn't have booked it had I known. I asked if we could have some money off the bill and they said they would knock some money off. They only knocked off a fiver which I thought was poor.

The room looked nice enough and was done out well. I was disappointed to find that there was not a proper shower and just a hand held one over the bath with no shower curtain so the floor got soaked every time. I think a shower is a basic necessity you should have in a hotel over having a fancy bath. As we had travelled from Manchester and walked around York for a few hours before checking in my husband wanted to take a nap. However, as we entered the room we could hear banging in the next room like someone was doing maintenance work. We phoned down to reception and to be fair it did stop and we could hear someone telling them to stop the work. However, it started up again at 8.30am the next day when we were trying to have a sleep in. I understand that sometimes the hotel may need to do maintenance but they should respect the fact that this will disturb guests and do it between 11.00 and 2.00 when people have checked out and before people check in.

We discovered the walls were also extremely thin and could even hear someone in the next room cough as well as hear there conversation. Because of this we found we were whispering which is not good when you are on holiday. However, breakfast was good the next day.

Stayed here from 20th October until 23rd October 2010. On arrival we were greeted by a friendly young lady, who, on discovering we were in York to get married, up graded the room we had booked to the loft suite, which was like having our own flat, complete with sauna! She (sorry didn't get her name) also up graded our friends room too. Brilliant! All the staff we encountered were just the same, really friendly and helpful. Accommodation was spot on, comfy bed, lovely old fashioned bath, big comfy sofas and a large TV. Just like being at home.Breakfast was lovely, and served quickly every morning .The location is brilliant too, York Minster is only a leisurely 10-15 minute walk away. All in all we couldn't fault this place, it's the second time we have stayed, and we hopefully will stay again. We would certainly recommend Marmadukes to anybody!

This is a really lovely small hotel, perfectly situated within 10 mins walk of the main centre. Very nicely furnished with lots of small attention to detail. Comfortable beds. Even bathrobes supplied on request, unusual for a small hotel. Spotlessly clean and very friendly staff. We were allowed to leave our car for the rest of the day on Sunday even though we were only there for a weekend and had to book out at 11. Super breakfast, quality ingredients. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend it and we are quite fussy.
