“Worse service than a budget hotel!”
Reviewed 19 July 2013

My wife and I stayed in the Honeymoon suite at Holme Lea and found it was the worse place we have ever stayed. The noise between the owners kids running around, the front door slamming and crockery being tossed around in the kitchen made it unbearable. When ringing the service at one time the owner admitted ignoring the bell because he was watching TV. I have emailed Holme Lea a few days ago and have had no response. Worst service that i have ever received anywhere!

We arrived mid-morning and, having previously rung to confirm, were able to leave the car in the hotel car-park and given a key so that we could access our room anytime after 2:00pm. We had room number 6 which was clean, spacious (it as a small snug with a TV and seating area) and comfortable. The bathroom had a good shower and plenty of shelf space although it looked as if there was a problem with condensation as one wall and part of the ceiling had peeling paint. The staff were friendly and helpful and the cooked breakfast was good. Not the cheapest but a hotel with parking within a 10 minute walk of York Minster is worth paying a premium for.

I can say that the location is perfect for all of York but not 4 star by any means.
I had to work that morning so we left the Midlands after I had finished a hectic shift looking forward to a special weekend away. After answering a phone call to ask what time we were arriving and a dreadful journey we arrived to be greeted by a smart young lady on a mobile phone who could barely book us in because her conversation was more interesting.
Room was ok nothing special the bed was two small and the ceiling of the bathroom was positively grotty.
My main concern was the hygiene at breakfast, busy place and was told which table we could use. Coffee was cold and horrible and choice reasonable. It was the moving of unused plates and cutlery from used tables to clean tables that got me cleaning my knife before using it. Also the fingers in cups and glasses that were visible once you had watched them being placed.
Although the staff wore tabards to cover their daily clothes nothing looked clean.
Perhaps a hygiene course would help them understand the problems they are stacking up.
The plus is the parking and position of the this hotel but the price is far to high as it is not what is advertisd.

Having spent time in Harrogate in a stunning apartment immediately prior to coming to York we were anticipating an equally enjoyable time as the Holme Lea Manor was advertised as 'luxurious'. Oh dear, how wrong can you be! From the state of the carpet on the stairs which looked as though it could do with a jolly good clean, to the chipped paintwork on the doorways, our route to our top floor room took us through a range of emotions, from eager anticipation to disappointment. The room had a four-poster bed which creaked alarmingly as soon as you moved. The room was very stuffy and hot and as the day had been very warm took hours to cool down as there was only one window to open. There was an extractor fan in the bathroom but it wasn't working and obviously hadn't been so for a long time as the wall above the shower cubicle was covered in mould and the paint flaking away. There was no way of dispersing the steam other than opening the door into the bedroom. There was black mould on some of the tile grouting and cobwebs near the ceiling. The shower, although with multi-functions, was very disappointing and not helped by the poor water pressure. The bedside table was dusty, there was a gap in the wall around an electric double socket in the room and another double socket marked 'redundant' with a felt-tip pen! The carpet in the room was also dusty. The breakfast menu was unexciting and the food mostly disappointing, however those serving it were friendly. We do not consider this in any way deserving of its 4-star rating, certainly not 'luxurious' and consequently we consider it to be expensive. The decor was tired and in need of attention. The only positive thing is its location within an easy 15 minute walk from the Minster area of the city.

Room Tip: Make sure you know exactly what to expect if you book a room as there is obviously a great deal of d...

It was also like the last poster our anniversary so i thought would book a " Luxury Room" Sorry this was not what i would call luxury . It was clean but small unlike the photo shown in the web site .It did have a four poster but was not a King size bed despite a sign outside which says all have King size beds it was a double at best Room 3 .The interior of the room was nicely decorated but was a bit tired looking in places carpet stains, paintwork ,dust in places .The bathroom was modern and clean but no Spa bath as shown in the web page ,nice shower although the control was broken and no lock on the door . Breakfast had a good choice service was good no bother if you wanted anything ,but food was never hot one would think if you order special items they are cooked for you not just made up like in a buffet style . Nice location 15 mins to station 10 mins to Minster .All in all not value .was disappointed in the whole "Boutique Style Hotel " not what i expected just a nice hotel .I just felt it was not the experience we where looking for stayed 3 days .As you can read others find it good just my experience and not what i would call a Luxury Guest house

We stayed at Holme Lea Manor for 4 nights recently. To say we were very disappointed is an understatement. They are billed as 4* but unfortunately they are more 3* wanting to be 4*. On first appearance, our room (number 4) was very spacious and tastefully decorated with 4 poster bed and slipper bath and modern ensuite shower room. The fact that the bedside table lamps did not work and the toilet roll holder in the ensuite was hanging by a thread on the wall did not bother us too much as they were repaired the first evening whilst we went out. However, after that we soon noticed things were not up to the usual B&B standard we have experienced in other B&Bs charging half the price and lower.

The tea/coffee making facilities were limited in the room. There were no herbal or fruit teas, no biscuits and only UHT milk in little individual cartons more common in a Travel Inn than a B&B costing £130 per night. There were no tumbler glasses either for water. We reported these things and after ringing the "bell for assistance" several times eventually were told by the owner (we only found out he was the owner at the end of the week as he did not introduce himself!) that they never provide glasses, biscuits or fresh milk. We were rather confused as it states in their Guest Book in the room that they do provide fresh milk and biscuits. We informed him of this but again he just said they do not provide those things. However, on that first evening after asking, he did actually load us up with a small tray to take back upstairs to our room holding two wine glasses, a few packets of biscuits and a small jug of fresh milk. The rest of the week we did not have such luxuries and the wine glasses were never cleaned!

The Guest Book also states that drinks such as selected bottled beers and wine can be obtained up until 2000 each day by ringing the bell in the hall. We did this one evening around 1930 but nobody appeared. We even rang their phone number and stood in the hall listening to the phone ring and ring. We gave up and went back up to our room.

During our stay the mugs in our room were often not cleaned properly, the bedside tables were very dusty, the towels were very thin and hard and one had a hole in it. Also the expel-air in the ceiling above the shower was caked in dust...yuk! The towel-rail in the en-suite although came on the first evening after that it was always stone cold. The week we were there the weather was not very warm so it was a bit chilly! Also the TV remote control had lost its back so the batteries fell out frequently.

Other B&Bs we have been to provide bottled water in the rooms as well as biscuits, fresh milk and tumblers in the bathroom and give a good selection of breakfasts. Unfortunately this B&B does not come anywhere near good enough to the amount it charges per person per night. When we came to leave, unfortunately one of the ladies who dealt with breakfast had to listen to our list of complaints and then had to relay them to the owners who live next door. The owners did not come and speak to us face to face. We eventually managed to reduce our total bill slightly.

The B&B is very impersonal and more like staying in a second rate hotel. There is none of the personal friendly attention most B&Bs offer. In short, the Holme Lea is not very homely!
