On the first day the service was excellent with very helpful reception staff and an attentive waitress. The breakfast was served promptly and was delicious. It was however, like being in a different guest house on day two. There were three waitress staff for breakfast - only one of which seemed to be doing any work. It took far too long for a waitress to take our order, our "Full English" was barely lukewarm and we had to wait 20 minutes when I asked for toast.
Watch out when you sit in the gardens - there were three piles of dog poo within 10 feet of our chair.

The Priory is a very odd place, with a mixture of B&B style items - like Ikea knives and forks and furniture that is shop purchased, to hotel style hard wearing bathroom furnishings and expensive bar drinks for rubbish drinks.

We booked a superior room and was given a family room (the one is the photo on the website actually), we didn't complain as its the same price and to be honest we had moved in and already had one nights stay.

The breakfast felt like it was an inconvenience, and on the first morning, ordering the fried breakfast, we received one sausage and no backed beans - even though we both ordered them. We had to ask for them again.

On the second morning my partner had two eggs on toast (good) but as I had ham and muffin with Hollandaise sauce (Yorkshire breakfast) I was only entitled to one egg.

The bar was expensive for cheap wine and the beer had become flat while in the pumps.

That said, you could help yourself to Milk tea and coffee at any time of the day free of charge, the gardens were well kept and the bathroom was clean. Although if they took a bit of space from the bathroom and put it in the bedroom this would have made the bedroom a lot bigger.

And this was the problem, throughout my stay, nothing was quite right, and it seemed as if the owner could not decide which side of the Hotel/B&B fence s/he wishes to sit.
The B&B side, has the aforementioned IKEA knives forks and furniture, locked doors at night (open with your key so 24 hr access) and one staff member is receptionist and bar tend. All things you expect with a B&B and I to be honest enjoy seeing.

Then on the Hotel side, you have the hard wearing bathroom furniture (this was truly an odd styling compared with the bedroom furniture) the portion controlled breakfast, and the wireless internet throughout)

And unfortunately for me this mix and match didn't quite reach the standards on either side.

The other issue we had was our bedroom faced a very noisy road - and although a fan was supplied (which we found as we were leaving (doh!) opening the window felt like you were sleeping on the pavement, closing it was not much better as all windows are single glazed

All in all, comfortable but very average

Room very disappointing, We upgraded to a superior room but to be honest was very basic. Although on the surface everything appeared to be clean, there were stains on the carpet and on the chairs. Also the television was broken and although we didnt mind that, it was a health risk as the screen was hanging off. When we mentioned this to reception, we were told they were aware of this and somebody had been called out to look at it. They said it was either risk us being in the room and have a risk of electrocution or cancel our booking.
On the first day the breakfast was unedible. We both asked for a full english and mine came with beans but they were burnt and obviously the last in the pot because despite being mentioned on the menu, my husband did not receive any. On the 2nd day we were forgotten about at breakfast and people who sat down a long time after us, were served first. When we asked them to take our order, we felt like we had imposed on them.
The hotel is in a great location and the grounds are lovely but the service and rooms are more on line with a 2* not a 4*. We actually stayed here for our honeymoon so was obviously a big disappointment.

The York Priory is a welcoming friendly hotel. We stayed only for one night in the four poster bedroom which was spotlessly clean and comfortable as was the rest of the hotel. The gardens were lovely, staff friendly and helpful and the breakfast was great. The location of the hotel is perfect for reaching the town center. When we visit York again we will certainly stay here again.

A large group of us met in York for a memorial dinner for my father. Several of us who were booked in to another guesthouse were immediately thrown out by the mad man of an owner! So we had nowhere to stay and several of the party had travelled a long way to be there. We then found shelter at The York Priory!
It was simply wonderful! We were let in as soon as we rang the doorbell by extremely kind and friendly staff. There was also a huge alsation sprawled across the floor who is the friendliest lump of dog I have ever come across! As we are all animal lovers, this was immediately a bonus! There were also facilities for free tea and coffee in the entrance/living room.
We were checked in quickly and efficiently and were shown to our rooms. They were nothing fancy but the view of the garden was wonderful and the beds were beyond comfy! There is fresh milk available downstairs for cups of tea and coffee in your rooms. There is also a covered smoking area in the back garden. The garden is beautiful!
We had breakfast in the morning which was wonderful! A full english breakfast cooked to order (the fried eggs were perfect!), fresh fruit (including watermelon and fresh pineapple), yoghurts, toast, juice, everything you could want! The staff were extremely friendly and completely on the ball with everything!
If I stay in York again, I will most certainly be staying at this place again!
Wonderful! Thank you very much for making the weekend run smoothly after a very shaky start!

Stayed here for two nights . lovely hotel very friendly was very comfortable and clean. Breakfast was very good.Ten minute walk along the river to centre of town .We were on our way back home from Alton Towers, and deceided we would break the journey home. Plenty to do and see just wish we had more time there . Would recomend this hotel no problem .Traffic noise at front of hotel , But it wouldnt put me off staying here. The garden is lovely to sit in and have refreshments

Room Tip: When booking request a back facing room if you want to avoid nose from traffic
