“We loved it here - didn't want to leave!”
Reviewed 5 June 2014

It's a bit ridiculous that I'm writing this review almost a year after we were there. But here I am, remembering our trip fondly. My husband, two daughters (14 and 11) and I went there last summer. We stayed for two nights in York, and would have loved to be there longer - York was one of our favourite places. We had a little trouble finding the hotel, because I think we were on the wrong part of Fulford, but once we settled in and got parked behind the building, we were all set. It was beautiful walking up through the back courtyard into the B&B, and they were so very friendly on checking in. The room was lovely - though I should have changed places with my husband, who banged his head at least once on the sloped ceiling on his side. Still - it was a beautiful room with the most plush and cushy bed - sheer heaven. We loved the dog, and we loved how eager the staff was to help us book things, call us cabs, dig out flyers and suggest options for dinner. They were lovely. We walked into the city centre about half the time, and it was fine, though a bit long - we usually got a cab back. Breakfast was delicious and filling. We all tried black pudding for the first time - and loved it! We would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: I think there's only one room big enough for a family of four - third floor, but the stairs are...

A review as kind as yours is worth waiting for! Thank you for taking the time to write your appreciative thoughts and feelings about The York Priory. We are very pleased to hear that you loved York; it is a beautiful city with so much to see and do for all ages. As you experienced, our staff are always very happy to help you with taxis and recommendations for restaurants and days out. We hope you will return in the near future, and get another chance to eat our freshly cooked Black pudding, and spend some more time with our little canine residents. Thank you once again for your kind feedback

I arrived at the hotel, situated on the main road into York and parked in the free gravel car park at the rear (a big plus), entering the hotel through the rear door passing the ancient architectural windows and arches that have been used as monuments in the rear garden.

The hotel also has an electric vehicle charging point, the first time I have seen that.

I was greeted by a couple of dogs, I am not a dog lover but they didn't jump up and were well behaved.

Following a friendly greeting by the proprietor I made my way up the squeeky staircase to my clean but compact room, which was well appointed with: TV (full range of free channels), tea and coffee making (fresh milk available in the fridge downstairs), a complimentary bottle of filtered water, biscuits, hairdryer, clean iron with board and electric fan heater.

The bathroom comprised a shower cubicle, clean wooden floor and copious fresh white towels, together with lots of handwash and shower gel. Very small but this is a converted Victorian property, so to be expected, like the creeky floor boards.

The bed was comfy, fresh white sheets and a variety of differing grade pillows.

The walk into York centre was around 10 minutes and there is a small bar area within the hotel together with a seating area with newspapers adjacent to the entrance door.

WiFi is free and worked well, including in the bedroom.

Breakfast was too late for me (commenced at 07:45) and it's cheaper if you book the night before.

For the price paid it offers great value for money based on the facilities offered and location and I would return.

My son and i came for a two night stay at the priory. We couldnt have wished for a nicer place to stay. All of the reception staff were friendly and informative about places to visit, bus times etc. the towels and bedding were spotless as was the room. I see in previous comments people have moaned about the rooms, this a late 1800s building with character and quirkyness if you are expecting a modern boxey room then book into one of the big hotel chains. But if you wish to stay in a beautiful big place full of homeliness then this place is for you, there is a little friendly bar room and the most beautiful gardens to sit and relax in and the breakfast is fantastic. It is situated a ten minute walk from city centre so is just near enough for attractions but just far enough away from all the late nite bar noise. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend the priory to anyone, we will definately go back :-)

This hotel is in an excellent location about 10 minutes walk to York centre, rooms were very clean and comfortable and staff helpful and friendly, would recommend and definitely return!
Did not stay for breakfast as this was optional extra and we chose to leave early.

Poor attention to detail with décor in bedroom looking very tired and dated.
Half used jam and butter sachets left in dishes on dining tables.
Bottles of sauces for use on tables more akin to a café than a four star B&B,
Wet towels left on the shower after use were just placed on radiator in bathroom,( even though heating wasn't on ) not replaced with clean towels.
Receptionist extremely helpful and pleasant as are the owners.
Over priced at £47 pppn. for standard of service etc.

The hotel was welcoming and had a very comfy feel to it. The 2 dogs were a cute addition and me and my partner found it cute that they would run around the house. The decor suited the building perfectly and the garden didn't disappoint either. We stayed on a Sunday and it was peaceful being situated at the back of the building. We will definitely be returning to the hotel, thank you for an amazing stay!

This place is a gem!

Stayed here with a group of friends and it couldn't have been better. Plenty of parking (we had a large minibus), very friendly welcome, quiet, spotless, comfy rooms, beautiful gardens to sit in, a well-stocked bar and lounge area and the breakfast is to die for. It's little more than a ten minute walk to the beautiful city centre along a riverbank walk. We all highly recommend The York Priory as a great place to stay in York whether sight-seeing or on business.
