As a solo traveller it isn't always easy to find a b&b with single rooms - if they have its often too pricey. The Grange Lodge has a very nice single room - small but ensuite and with everything you need and a sensible price. Very friendly owners, easily walkable into the centre and satisfyingly outside York City football ground. The owners provide a parking permit which is very useful. Would very happily stay there again.

Room Tip: The parking permit is very useful in the side roads where all is residents only.

My boyfriend and I stayed for one night in room 8, we made our way in using the self-check in service which we found really easy and helpful for when we arrived late back to the room in the evening. Grange lodge had a very homely, comfortable feeling and we found our room (Double deluxe room) to be just right for us. However, there were problems with the heater, where on a few occasions throughout the night and definatley in the morning we woke up to a very cold room. The breakfast was delicious and freshly made when we arrived downstairs. Grange lodge is ideally located just a short 10 minute walk from the York Minster, very easy to find and an enjoyable walk. Sarah kindly allowed us to keep the parking permit for the whole of the second day, which saved us a lot of hassle looking for parking and also costs. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Grange Lodge, and would definatley look to stay again in the new year.

Stayed here for one night in Room no 8 which is classed as a luxury room and costs £90. I think that was a bit over priced as the only so called luxury is the fact that the bathroom has a spa bath with a TV in the wall. The room is tiny , bathroom even tinier. Couldn't get the spa bath to work and the novelty of the TV in the bathroom soon wore off. There is no view at all as the room is in the attic so only has roof lights. The room was very clean but up three flights of stairs and the bed was very hard. Hardly slept at all. To me a luxury room should have lovely toiletries and bath robes and even a few biscuits to have with your tea but there was none of that. Breakfast was delicious and the staff very freindly and its in a good location. Wouldn't stay again though. Next time we go to York I will choose somewhere overlooking the river. Ate at the No 8 Gillygate restaurant which was yummy

Prior to arriving in York, I looked at reviews and didn't have high expectations towards this B&B. Now after staying a weekend there, I cannot for the life of me understand the bad reviews towards Grange Lodge. My boyfriend and I had such a lovely stay that if we were to return to York, we're looking forward to staying here again. The owners were such lovely and helpful people who were always cheerful, and made amazing breakfast for us. I cannot explain how amazing it was to start our day in York with the yummy breakfast they prepared. Also, the room was small but it was completely functional, clean and comfortable. The bed was comfortable and we had such a good night sleep in it. We didn't have any problems with noise at night, like how the other reviews described there to be. It was a breeze getting in because the code written on your keychain.
All in all, I can't say enough nice things about Grange Lodge. I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a place to stay in York that is within close distance to the city centre.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 3, but I'm sure the other rooms are as nice (if not nicer).

My two children and i booked the family room here with an adult friend, who later cancelled. it was a good job she did because the extra bed they said there was no problem popping into the bedroom had to be put so close to the other single bed that they were literally touching, so that it was like having two doubles in there, rather than 1 double and two singles. this would have been wholly inappropriate for our friend to have joined us in. having said that, the hosts were lovely, the room was warm and largely clean with comfy beds. there was very little storage but as we were just there for one night this was not an issue. Breakfast was VERY slow in coming, but quite nice when it came, with unlimited supplies of toast but very little butter to put on it! The shower was not working properly - presumably due to others using it in the house, but it meant it was literally a trickle for my son's shower. it was near to the town centre, and the owners were kind enough to stay in, as i managed to leave the out of hours code and entry details at home. Over all a positive experience but not fantastic.

Room Tip: perhaps a top floor room would be less noisy as it was mainly overhead foot fall that could be heard...
