“Just love the Ascot Lodge”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 March 2010

Whenever I feel the need for some retail therapy in York we head for the Ascot Lodge. This was our fourth stay and we cannot find fault with it. Very friendly and helpful owners, location just outside the main centre of York (on a good bus route) so it is more peaceful then being in the centre, excellent freshly cooked breakfast with good quality ingredients, very clean rooms with soft towels, good toiletries and well stocked tea tray. Will definitely be back.

Stayed for one night at the Ascot Lodge in December 08. Had a single room on the ground floor which although clean was rather small and poorly designed. The breakfast was good. On arrival the owner refused to let me use the car park (which is advertised on their website) because people leaving at unearthly hours of the morning (8:50 am on a midweek morning) disturbed his neighbours. He insisted I park on the main road outside the B&B so I was absolutely furious to discover my wing mirror smashed off when I came to leave in the morning. I informed the owner but all he could offer was a shrug. After replacement cost of an electric wing mirror was factored in, this was my most expensive one night stay in a cheap B&B ever.

We stayed for one night having booked two family rooms. One for my wife and I and one for our two teenage sons. The building itself is a lovely spacious victorian. The rooms were very large and had all the amenities you would expect - tea making facilities, TV, Dvd. They were clean and very well furnished. The owners were friendly and made sure we had all we needed. There is a secure car park at the rear but we parked in the street as there were no parking restrictions and plenty of space to park in front of the building. Breakfast was well cooked and very enjoyable in the well presented breakfast room. We will definately stay there again.

My husband and I stayed there for one night. The photos on their website don't do the guest house any justice at all. The owners have obviously put a lot of effort in to making the place look inviting and homely and as we are ex-b&b hosts ourselves we know that it hasn't been cheaply done. The little touches in the bedroom and the cleanliness of the whole place made it perfect for us.

Yes, the decor is not contemporary like so many lifeless other b&b's but so what, it's got character and it's spotlessly clean.

The car park at the back of the property is very secure, you have to go under the neighbours house to get to it so you can leave your car there all day in the knowledge that you can get a bus into town (the No.1 leaves from right outside the guest house and goes into York every 20 minutes and stops right outside the Theatre Royal in Yorks main shopping centre). This guest house is an ideal place to stay and we would definitely recommend it and intend to stay there again, soon.

Well done to the owners.

  • Liked — The cleanliness and the convenience to York.
  • Disliked — The coffee.

(Not to be confused with Ascot House)
Arrived to a very warm welcome, and a nice pot of tea. There is a car park around the back with plenty of space. The b and b itself is lovely old building with lots of character. Our room was for three, as the doubles were already booked up.It had a double bed, single bed, settee, armchair, and was still spacious. It was all very clean and comfortable. Also, a TV and drink making facilities. All rooms are ensuite, and the bathroom was also to a very high standard. We stayed for two nights over the weekend during December.I really can`t fault the place, the breakast was also very good, with plenty of extra toast, fresh fruit as well as the cooked breakfast.
I would recommend it to anyone. The only disadvantage was that it was a fair walking distance to the centre of York. Asct Lodge is located in Acomb which is about 2 miles out of the City Centre. My partner an I like to walk and so it wasn`t a problem for us.It took about half an hour at a steady pace. There is a bus stop just outside the b and b with frequent buses. We also caught a taxi back a couple of times which didn`t break the bank!

An ideal place to stay if you don`t want to worry about your car, and don`t mind walking or catching the bus into the centre.

PS they currently only take cheques or cash.

  • Liked — Very clean and friendly
