Booked in by a friend in York......Unfortunatly for us the place has just changed hands and accomodation was not a priority.Sharefd a twin room for what should have been 3 nights .On our return on the 2nd day we found the room just as it had been left that morning...........when enlightened to this the staff were apologetic but made no effort to help.We cut short our stay.Food ok beers excellent ,price of £75 pn was a joke. They might try in future >BEFORE YOU STAY CHECK THE ROOMS>even if made up they are in desperate need of attention. Not a good advert for B&B in York

This place was recommended by freinds and I can tell you they were not wrong.
What they had missed was the exciting new menu. We had Chicken Wings and Nacho's covered in cheese. Followed by the new home made Gilly Burger (This was no ordinary burger just thrown on a plate. It was a tower of delight.) and a Gammon Steak with 2 fried eggs.(had to take a picture) Only sorry we did not leave room for pudding.
What else could equal this. The cooked breakfast did !. Cooked fresh as you finished your cereal.
Great Rooms - Awesome Food - Fantastic location - Perfect Hosts.
Top notch. Will be back.

Room Tip: Book early and get room 2 or 4.

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights 8th/9th April, we have visited York on a number of occasions but for the hospitality this was one of the best, staff were fantastic and the room was spotless. The Gillygate is in a great location. We had Room 5 which was spacious and the only down side was the room was very warm and no ventilation ie windows do not open but then it is a old building, also the toilet would make a awful banging noise when flushed but again the age of the building, but this was the only down side on a extremely lovely stay. We had a evening meal on the first night which was first class. Top marks for the staff and Eric the owner. Also The Gillygate has parking at the back which is a plus for York. Would stay again.

My husband and i stayed at the Gillygate last weekend.
It was a last minute decision to stay in York that evening, so wasn,t sure what to expect
It was the roaring fire we noticed as we walked into the Gillygate, Eric the landlord introduced himself to us as we made inquiries as to the availability of accomodation for the night.
After settling into a very comfortale double en-suite room we decided to go back downstairs to the restaurant for a meal.
I had the steak and ale pie and my husband had a steak, which we both enjoyed.
We then made our way into the bar. The bar staff gave us both a very warm welcome.. They had some regulars at the bar whom were very friendly and involved us into there conversations. We had a lovely evening and retired to bed.
Morning came and we went down to a full english breakfast.
We will be certain to return to the Gillygate, but next time book.

We arrived at this hotel as we had been told by friends it was great, think I will be having a word with them as this was not the case.

We have stayed in many hotels as we travel around a fair bit and for seventy pounds I was expecting something with a bit better quality. Its in dire need of a update we stayed on the top floor the room was ok size but very hot and wardrobes that broke as soon as u touched them a very noisy toilet. Fred the spider as your friend in the bathroom, shower was electric and basically just drizzled on you and u must have to be only the size of a child to comfortably get in. Also they didn't explain that they shut and lock the gates and you have to enter at the side gate when you come back late at night and we were stuck outside for half an hour trying to get in all I can say is u good job it was a summer night.
