“Wonderful food and great atmosphere!”
Reviewed 12 March 2013

As a group of friends who actually live in York we hadn't realised what a gem the Gillygate was until recently. We called in one evening by chance and have been returning ever since. The staff and regulars are incredibly friendy and the whole pub has a very welcomming atmosphere. However, the main reason we keep returning on weekend nights out is the food. We have sampled many dishes now and all have been superb. The menu is not extensive but what is produced is produced exceptionally well and at a very high standard. Not your usual pub grub - and good value also!

I've seen a lot of reviews of the Gillygate Hotel, so i wanted to produce an honest review.

It’s in a great location right in the centre, and very easy to find. Free parking is a benefit and will easily save you £10 over the course of your stay compared to hotels where you have to pay to park.
Arrived at 1345 to check in and was told we couldn't check in until 1400 so we had a pint in the bar which was friendly and warm. At 1420 we asked for our room key, but was told that the room wouldn't actually be ready for another 20 minutes, a bit frustrating.
When we got in to the room it was in the roof but cosy. The windows were single glazed but there was a powerful heater to keep the place warm. Really nicely decorated room, very personal unlike the 'clinical' Premier Inn/Travelodge hotels. Yes, there was some mould in places and the paint had bubbled, but i wasn't there to review the decorating.
The bathroom was basic and the shower terrible, but nothing is ever as good as your own shower.
The breakfast the following morning was perfect, full fry up plus cereal, toast and hot drinks.

Would i say the room was worth what i paid for the night? Probably not, but when you consider that it'd cost about £40.00 for Premier Inn/Travelodge, and you don't get breakfast included, plus sometimes be in an out-of-town location, then i'd stay somewhere like this.

Would give the owners a gentle nudge to maybe spend some money on the upkeep of the rooms to make it a little more comfortable.

We stayed in York for two nights during the February half term. Our room at the Gillygate was at the front and although it was a busy road we had a good nights sleep, the bed was very comfortable. The main problem was the ensuite which was very small and there was nowhere to hang towels or put toiletries,it also had a pumped macerator toilet that was very noisy, not sure it was working properly.Breakfast was included and was freshly cooked to order and was very good.

A run down pub of the sort that is slowly dying on its feet. Breakfast is included which is just as well because no one in their right mind would pay for it - after the first night we ate elsewhere. Rooms are cold, no double glazing, badly fitting windows letting in the cold and noise from a very busy road, tepid water and lack of water pressure means the shower is next to useless. In need of massive investment to bring it anywhere near an acceptable standard in the modern world. Why go there when there is so much better available? If you want cheap and cheerful go to the Travelodge which is much better value

After reading other reviews I was a limitless sceptical about staying here but it was a very nice comfortable stay.
We were in room 5, which did suffer a little from the traffic noise but didn't disturb our sleep, there was NOT any fungus in the shower or anywhere else, a little mildew yes but nothing horrific! A little damp on the wall beneath the window but all in all good value, the bed was clean and comfy and the breakfast very nice.

We came here last year and ate here after it was recommended by the landlady of the guesthouse where we were staying.

We came back again this year on our annual visit to York. It serves traditional pub food, but very good quality pub food at a very good price. The menu has a good selection on it, enough to keep most people happy I think. There is a good selection of real ales too.

The room where we ate was lovely and quiet, near the fire, next to the window, watching the world go by. It is slightly outside the city, a whole 2 mins away, on a busy road, but you don't notice it inside. It is not at all touristy either, which is always a good thing. A great place to eat an evening meal.

We booked a table at The Gillygate for a birthday meal as the reviews I read were excellent and the menu was varied. However, when we were given our menus we were told they didn't have the full menu available, only about half the dishes were available, and this was on a Saturday night. We asked for Champagne but was told they had none (it was on the wine list), the best they could do was Cava. We had hair in the starters. No fresh cutlery was given for main meals, we had to ask for it. One meal came with cold prawns and they had to cook a fresh meal, some elements of other meals were cold too. We were a party of 8 and they said they only had 4 steaks in the kitchen so some had to order a different main. We also heard guests at the next table moaning about their meals. This was a real disappointment after reading such good reviews. We don't like to complain but we pointed out the problems and all we got was "I'm really sorry about that". Oh and I was told there was mould all over the men's toilet walls. The only thing I'm really pleased about is that they had no rooms available when we tried to book those! We stayed at The Blakeney Guest House which was excellent.
