We were not expecting much reading previous comments but what a surprise to arrive on the 20th June to see that the whole place been renovated! Everything is brand new, the room I stayed has new TV, a comfortable couch, spanking new bathroom. I would have loved to stay for another 2 more nights but had to move on. The staff were really friendly. Very highly recommended.

Forget all previous reviews of this place - from today, 20th June, there's nothing left of the old place - and that's a real plus...

The bar is new, the 2 lounges are totally new, the beer garden is new and there's 8 new bedrooms totally renovated.

I walked in the pub with my wife and we thought we had walked into the wrong building it was so unrecognisable. I'm sure this will be very popular given its location near to York Minster and because it sells lots of real ales.

The staff were very welcoming and friendly but the pub and bedrooms were very tired , the Decore was dated , the bathroom was horrible , Lino was old , tiles with mould on grout , shower wasn't very powerful and made a noise , when you flushed toilet sounded like was gonna drop through floor .
The best bit about our stay was breakfast which was freshly cooked to order .

We stayed for one night 12.4.2014. The pub itself is cosy and welcoming with very friendly staff. The breakfast was delicious!!
The room as mentioned in other reviews had décor from the 1970's including the hairdryer!
The en-suite was full of mould with no window or extractor fan. However the bedding & towels were crisp and clean. Location is perfect.
We would definitely return to the Gillygate but only after refurbishment . There was a notice in the bar stating refurb to take place in May- June.

The owner Brian was friendly, the other staff were nice, the location was excellent and the breakfast was lovely. Free parking was a big bonus and the room was a good size. If you are a light sleeper be aware that some of the rooms overlook the main road. This isnt the most romantic or fancy place to stay but was very good value for money and I would definatley go back. I should also mention that Brian told us the pub/rooms are getting a refurb but even if they werent the fact some people are complaining for £65 including breakfast and parking is unbelievable. If you want luxury pay £100 a night at the best western or somewere similar and this does not include breakfast either. You get what you pay for normally and for the price this was a good place to stay.

A very short stroll from York Minster and the centre. Welcoming friendly staff.
Extremely good value. It only cost £65 for a twin room including breakfast, so we kept an open mind.
Just as well we did.
We only booked for one night. The room, in fact the whole hotel was very dated and would have benefitted from a complete redecoration. It could have been undertaken over the slack winter season.
The bedding was clean, the bed a little too firm for me.
Our room was overlooking the street and the constant road noise was disturbing, especially the occasional sirens from the passing emergency vehicles.
We used the bathroom sink to "bathe", we wouldn't use the shower, as the shower cubicle and shower head were showing black mould everywhere. The cleaner had also missed some bits, it was a bit dusty.
There was an intermittent strong sewage smell coming from the bathroom drains and no facility to ventilate. The bedroom window wouldn't open.
Breakfast was delicious, served by a smiling, helpful barman.
The staff were absolutely charming, We were given full use of the free parking facilities for the remainder of the day, even though we had already checked out.
With a little bit of attention to the décor, this could be a gem of a place.
I would definitely return if the minus points were attended to. Oh and I would ask for a room at the rear.

Room Tip: As for a room at the rear of the building.

A central location but room rates much lower than other apparently similar establishments. What could possibly be wrong?
I arrived at this attractive pub, entered and was warmly greeted by Harrison, who was behind the bar. He showed me up to my room and helpfully carried my luggage up for me.
My room was clean, well appointed with a nice bay window, and well arranged table and chairs overlooking the main road outside.
The room had all the facilities that one would expect. Tea/coffee facilities and tasty biscuits, a working retro hairdryer that was located by a suitable mirror and dressing table, a flat screen television, and a very comfortable bed. There was even a nice full length mirror located near the en suite, for the Lady or Metrosexual Male to preen themselves before hitting the streets of York.
What could possibly be wrong?
Well, the room decor was about twenty years past it's sell by date but the room was clean and tidy.
What could possibly be wrong?
I opened the door to the en suite facilities. Many years previously, the owner of the pub had clearly decided to update his bedrooms to have modern facilities. He had, however, omitted to install extractor fans to remove the moisture (and, of course smells). Dear Reader, you can but imagine. Despite the efforts of Brian and his team, it would not be possible to raise the standard of these facilities to an acceptable standard, due to the ingrained dirt and mould.
However, I understand that Brian, is fully aware of these problems, and I had the pleasure of hearing from him, that the pub is closing in May for a full refurbishment.
So why would I give this location a five star accolade?
Well, the staff were great, friendly and helpful. The Pub and it's customers were also very welcoming.
The Pub has an interesting food offering and I, particularly enjoyed the Chef's "Belly Pork & Tasty Black Pudding".
So, I have "Great Expectations" for the future.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front have traffic noise.
