Really happy to talk to the enthusiastic chef and try the new menu today. Amazing pie, best I can think of and super day fresh fish & chips. So happy to see such a great pub with decent ale and food and decor. If you haven't been in yet, give it a try. Well done Brian & Suzi (and chef, and 'boats'). Top marks guys!

York seems to be the "must go to" place as the moment and the pub companies have responded. There have been 3 major pub renovations in the last month alone and The Gillygate is one of them.

The old place was symptomatic of many pubco places at the moment that were undervalued and suffer from a lack of investment. It was tired and lacked any appeal at all even though it is situated on a busy thoroughfare.

Add to the mix an enthusiastic and hard working new manager and suddenly the pubco has the confidence to put a huge amount of money into a total transformation and I mean TOTAL.

The infrastructure of the place has remained - but that is all. Totally new decor; totally new bar area; totally new letting rooms; totally new Whisky snug; totally new real ale selection and a brand new outside beer garden. Add parking for all rooms and you've got something that will draw drinkers; eaters and boarders.

This should ensure that with hard work and lots of publicity to attract back people who remember the tatty old place that The Gillygate will thrive.

Last week whilst in York myself and husband went to the Gillygate for liquid refreshment. Staff were very pleasant, as was the Thatchers cider!! Beer garden well laid out but would look better with decent parasols and not "pub brand" ones. Food menu looked and priced good but did not have time to sample. Would recommend.

The Gillygate has just re-opened, following an extensive refurbishment and I had the pleasure of staying in one of the newly appointed rooms.

If you are visiting York then I would highly recommend staying at The Gillygate.

Why?

- Fabulous location, just behind York Minster with views of the Minster and the City Walls.
- Private Car Park if you have booked a room.
- Very high standard of decor throughout, I have read some of the previous reviews and the new owners deserve praise for the great job that they have done with the refurbishment. Everything feels new (probably because it is.)
- Well stocked bar with a great selection of beers and real ales, you should also ask the owners about "The Whisky Snug"!

This is not a Hotel, nor is it simply a Bed and Breakfast. As I saw on the sign as I left, The Gillygate is a "Pub with Rooms" but it is of the very highest standard. Take a look for yourself.

We were not expecting much reading previous comments but what a surprise to arrive on the 20th June to see that the whole place been renovated! Everything is brand new, the room I stayed has new TV, a comfortable couch, spanking new bathroom. I would have loved to stay for another 2 more nights but had to move on. The staff were really friendly. Very highly recommended.
