Description: This place is temporarily closed due to flooding on Dec 27, 2015. We do not anticipate being open before the 2nd Quarter of 2017. We will provide further updates on an estimated reopening date as we have this information available. Located near York Minster, The Blue Bicycle has become one of York's dining landmarks. With a French style English menu heavily weighted towards fish dishes, an unpretentious, welcoming atmosphere, professional French waiters, and charming decor, it is no wonder this eaterie is often packed. The downstairs is particularly romantic and atmospheric -- it is allegedly a former brothel and the decor is true to it's blue period. Menu favourites include the chef's own spicy fish cakes with pineapple salsa, and grilled scallops with sweet chilli sauce to start, followed by a steaming bowl of monkfish and prawn chowder, or tuna with red onion, lime and coriander salsa.

Friends recommended this restaurant but it is sometime since they were there and things must have gone downhill recently. We weren't asked if we wanted a drink when the menu was given to us and things did not improve. We waited over 20 minutes after being given the sweet menu for someone to take our order before we decided just to pay and leave. No one asked if we had enjoyed the meal.We hadn't. Of the 4 dishes we had all disappointed being rather bland and boring.
This is quite an expensive restaurant which adds to the disappointment. There are much better restuarants in York

We wanted to treat ourselves to a lovely lunch and had walked past the Blue Bicycle several times, stopping to look at the menu and inside, and we dedcided to eat here. The atmosphere was very nice when we walked in and had a nice table. The waitress was pleasant enough but the waiter did not appear to be interested in serving or even acknowledging us - everything seemed like it was too much bother for him. Food was fair to middling, wine was good but overpriced. We asked for a bottle of mineral water and were given a jug of tap water which we were still charged at the same price for the bottled water - what a rip-off. Service charge was added on to the bill which we did not agree with - the option is there to ask for this to be removed. If this is the case, why not remove it altogether and allow customers to give their own tip? There are a lot more restaurants nearby where you get better service and value. This establishment appears to be geared up to making as much money as possible at the expense of customer service. We visit York regularly - have not been back since.

Similar to another reviewer, I had always wanted to go to the blue bicycle in my student days, but couldn't afford it, so 8 years later on a christmas shopping expedition to York, we decided to give it a go. On the positive side, the atmosphere was very good as the place was full, but that's where the positives ended!

I had a cod with pork belly for starters, the cod had been coated in polenta and fried to extinction so was incredibly dry. The pork belly and accompanying sauce were so overbearing that it might as well have been topped with chicken for all the fish I could taste. My main course was quite nice, but the potatoes were underdone and the accompanying veg that we paid for at £3 was just some cauliflower, beans and carrots -not very imaginative! My husband had scallops followed by seabass, both of which he said were 'ok'. not exactly a ringing endorsement!

To make matters worse, it was incredibly expensive. Our local michelin starred restaurant is cheaper than the blue bicycle and you get lots of freebies along the way! I thought it was a particular cheek to charge £3.50 for a bottle of house filtered water - not mineral water, but just filtered from the tap!!

Overall, it felt a bit like it was stuck in a time-warp. The portions were too big for such stodgy food (and if you reduced the portions, you could cut down the price). The chef was obviously trying to keep up with food fashion with his pork belly and micro shoots, but had completely forgotten about flavour in the mean time.

Glad I didn't shell out my precious student cash all those years ago!!

went to this restaurant with my wife as a treat. bit pricey but a treat. had sirloin steak with horseradish croquette. mouthful of steak - lovely. mouthful of croquette - so hot it burnt the roof of my mouth, made my eyes water and made me hop up and down. mentioned to waiter that the meal had caused me pain. credit to him he went to kitchen to discuss. discredit to chef; he sent the waiter back to advise me the croquette had been deep fried and as such i should have expected food so hot i now have oral blisters. it was a very nice spot, lovely ambience, just unfortunate i feel i have been phsyically assaulted and then dismissed as a bit of a fusspot.

To be fair of the four of us dining three had great food, the fourth member of our party ordered sirloin steak with French mustard. Wholegrain mustard offered with (when queried) no French available. the accompanying "black pudding and hollandaise sauce" was truly awful. But what really made this experience stand out was when we asked for the half of the remaining sirloin to be wrapped up for a "doggy bag". Sorry, not allowed was the unexpected response. Shocked we queried this and were told that is was a health and safety issue, no food was allowed out of the resteraunt. Up to this point all four of us were having an excellent night out. However after having been charged £22.00 plus £3.00 for chips and a further £3.00 for side salad we thought this was totally out of order. Having paid for the food surely it belongs to us? NO was the unequivocal response "it is our policy not to let any food leave the restaurant". Result. 4 unhappy customers, having paid £186 for 4 two course meals and two bottles of pinot grigio which is a lot of money. As restaurant owners ourselves (5 star and charging a lot less than this) we were appalled to find a fellow resteraunter behaving in this manner.
