Description: The National Trust's Middlethorpe Hall, is a William III country house close to the city of York set in 20 acres of its own gardens and parkland. Built in 1699, it was once the home of the famous diarist. Lady Mary Wortley Montagu. After a period of neglect, the Hall was sympathetically restored with decorations, antiques and pictures carefully chosen as consistent with the period of the house. The panelled dining rooms overlooking the gardens and the imaginative food designed by Head Chef Nicholas Evans, much prasied in all the guide books, follows the hotel's theme of traditional excellence.Afternoon Tea is served daily in the C18th Drawing Room and 'Al-Fresco' dining is available to be taken on the south facing terrace.

What a treat to eat here. Simply beautiful drawing room and wonderful wood panelled dining room. Simply superb food - I can heartily recommend their Taster Menu! Great service.

“Achieved the impossible - a meal that tasted like water”
Reviewed 5 July 2014

This "award winning" restaurant is a joke. The food is absurdly expensive, and has no taste. I had a halibut dish that literally had no flavor - that includes the sauce and accompanying vegetables and potato. Hard to believe. Avoid at all costs.

We are sorry that this guest was not satisfied with his visit and in particular with the experience in the dining room. The team here cares deeply about the comfort of our guests and their enjoyment of a stay, and satisfies most people as the other reports on this site illustrate.

My husband and I are vegetarians, who eat fish. Each evening the chef made a wonderful plate for us. In addition, the fish and risotto were outstanding.

“Small corporate function at Middlethorpe Hall”
Reviewed 19 May 2014

The accommodation, food and service were all excellent.

The location, near to York Racecourse and to the start of the second day of the Tour de France, is wonderful, and they have made a tangible memento of this by lovingly mowing the image of a bicycle into their nearby field. Watch this space from above as well as from within.
