The Akash is an amazing find, tucked away from the main attractions.
It's tiny and basic, don't let that put you off.
The food's amazing, tasty & imaginative.
The staff are attentive, knowing whan to approach and when to stay in the background.
I moved to York last year, I find the majority of the restaurants are of a disappointing poor standard. They cater for the tourists who'll never return.
This is the place to try.

We escaped the rowdy party groups by having a very good meal in this small and quiet restaurant near our hotel. The staff were attentive and the menu varied - the King Prawns were particularly good. Prices were cheaper than average too.

After a long time deciding on which indian to eat at in york, as there are so many to choose from I choose this one.
I dined her for my birthday alongside my boyfriend. Found it easily enough and had a very warm and happy greeting from the staff.
The restaurant is small but big enough to create a nice atmosphere. all the staff were very friendly and made us both feel welcome and comfortable.
The food was delicious and there was good banter with the staff.
We ordered popadoms which to my amusement were already preped up behind the counter and as soon as they took the order they were there on the table!!! Found that a little cringey but the place was busy so I hoped they hadn't been there that long.
Overhearing another dinner who had the rogan josh, complaing there wasn't enough tomatoes in it!!!!! i felt for the staff. They acted with great politeness and i admired them for that as i thought the mans complaint was absolutely pathetic.
Overall i would most certainly go again and recommend to friends.
Great night in a cosy restaurant with friendly, fun staff. Refreshing.

Following reviews on here we headed out to see what this place was like. Staff are EXTREMELY good, best asset of restaurant l think. Very helpful selecting dishes to our palate, attentive and polite. Food was quick, really tasty and great Nan Bread. Well worth the trip. A pleasure to dine there infact. We would return and l highly recommend it.

This was our second visit to York this year and on our first trip we found this hidden gem. Not particularly easy to find but well worth the effort. From opening the door the staff are polite, helpful and attentive. Nothing is too much trouble. The restaurant itself is deceptively small, though the customers never feel cramped or uncomfortably close to other diners, which is often the case where space is limited. As for the food: my partner and I have been eating Indian food for well over thirty years and we are in agreement that the food here is very probably the best Asian food we have ever eaten. The unpretentious meals are as fresh as a bracing Yorkshire breeze, well balanced, subtlety spiced; not merely heat for its own sake. Everything is cooked perfectly, from the robust curry dishes, the variety of rice dishes to the vast choice of side dishes. The only dilemma facing the diner is choosing which meal from the extensive and reasonably priced menu. Plaudits must, once again, go to the affable unassuming waiters, who seem able to anticipate the needs of the customer; whether this be a friendly chat, or more discreet service. Can't recommend The Akash highly enough.
