We stayed for our anniversary for the weekend and loved it from start to finish. We were travelling with our dog and he received the warmest welcome of anywhere we have stayed with him. They provided a dog bed and bowls and he was allowed to stay in the room if we wanted to pop out or have dinner. The reception staff were helpful and also recommended some great places to visit and to eat. The Star Inn the City and the Lamb & Lion were our particular favourites.

As we were celebrating, they gave us a few glasses of champagne in the Bistro to enjoy when dining. The food here was great and the service was good too. The Chateaubriand was exceptional, as were the breakfasts on both mornings. As we had our dog with us, we could eat in the indoor terrace, which was perfect for a lazy morning breakfast.

Room was beautiful and spacious and the bathroom was almost the size of the bedroom. Loved the roll top bath and the shower.

All in all, a great hotel to stay in, particularly if your 4 legged friend needs a holiday too.

Room Tip: We were in Taittinger, which despite being directly above the bar was very quiet and stumbling dista...

Stayed one night at the HdV. I concur with other reviewers that it is a nice location, quiet and tranquil yet 10 mins walk to Micklegate Bar and the Kings Staith bridge area.

Check in was smooth and friendly though reception was a tad short-staffed, especially when the one person on duty personally escorts everyone who checks in to show them their room.
Hint: if ever you call the HdV in York, don’t give up but leave the phone ringing for a loooonnng time!

Room was nice in the loft of the new annex part called The Shambles. One drawback was that it was up two flights of stairs and there was no lift.

Stairwell was stiflingly hot but room luckily had air conditioning. It was a bit dark and lacked plugs, mirrors and natural light (possibly a problem for female guests needing to fix make up?). Massive shower and the usual free-standing roll top bath in the room.

Bar staff were friendly and hospitable and had the good grace to laugh at jokes at their own expense after overcharging me! Sadly, no draught beer, all mixers are tiny bottles so a bottled beer (Deuchars IPA) and a lime & soda came to eight quid. And despite a lot of discussion, the HdV, in my opinion at least, doesn’t know what a croque monsieur is – if it’s soggy and lacks crunchiness, it can’t be a croque, can it?

To be fair, it was eventually comped but the fact that the barman finished my sentence with the words “…it’s just soggy bread!” when I started to say “this is meant to be a croque monsieur but….” suggests that I wasn’t the first one ever to complain. Too hot, too much cheese and bechamel, served in a shallow dish and impossible to (pick up and) eat – you’d need a spoon!

Restaurant, sorry bistro, in the evening was fine. Food very good though not cheap. The French onion soup is really excellent. My steak frites was fine. Didn’t have a dessert. Service was also fine though possibly a little rushed between starters and mains. I do wish they wouldn’t try and double dip with 10% service charge and open cc slips for gratuities though!

Breakfast was also fine: friendly service, good selection of cold buffet and hot stuff came promptly.

All in all I’d return.

We stayed in the large Moet suit for a birthday getaway. I was pleasantly supprised by how great the room was and how polite and friendly the staff were. We had a initial hickup in the room but this was perfectly compensated for by the hotel staffs response. We will definitely be staying again soon.

We stayed for a wedding, so have a skewed view on what they would normally offer.

the location is perfect, just outside of York with free parking, which is rare! The wedding was brilliant and the wedding breakfast was delicious.

We stayed over in the Chateau Badock room, his was clean and very well appointed and maintained. We had a special rate through the wedding, but wouldn't pay the normal rate for the room as it was a standard 4 star room.

The only gripe I would have was the extortionate price they had for drinks, but is common place in hotels of that standard.

My fiancé and I stayed here for 1 night during the Easter bank holiday and we couldn't fault it. We had planned to do some shopping so wanted a hotel that was fairly central, nice and reasonable and this hotel ticked all the boxes.

ROOM
We paid £250 for the bed, breakfast and dinner package and stayed in their 'Mezzanine' room which was fabulous. The bed was very comfortable, the TV had sky sports (which my fiancé loved!) and there was a nespresso machine as well. Upstairs was a gorgeous bathroom with separate waterfall shower and roll top bath. In room snacks and drinks were obviously expensive but there was a little sainsburys across the road so we bought some things from there. Champagne flutes and pint glasses were also provided which I thoughts was a nice touch.

FOOD
With the dinner package you either chose from a set menu (which was quite limited) or £20 per head could be put forward to choose food from the a la carte which is what we did. The service was very attentive and the food was amazing (French bistro).
The breakfast was probably one of the best I've had in a hotel. There was your typical cereal, pastries and fry-ups but also quite a few other dishes if you didn't want the norm.

SERIVCE
Very polite, attentive and friendly. We had brought a cake with us as we were going on to a friends birthday the next day and we asked the reception staff if they would store it way safely for us during our stay and they were more than amenable.

All in all a very lovely stay and we would DEFINITELY stay here again!

Room Tip: The mezzanine room was just one level above the standard rooms and it was amazing, I wouldn't sp...

Booked a twin room at this hotel to share with a friend. Room was lovely with twin sleigh beds with lovely duvet and two luxurious pillows. Black out curtains in the room ensured a good nights sleep. Shower was divine and plenty of toiletries. Dressing gowns and sumptuous towels provided. Full cooked breakfast was tasty and well presented.staff were very helpful and nothing was too much trouble. Hotel was 5 - 10 mins away from city centre. Couldn't fault anything and will definatly stay again.
