Booked a table via the website as a last minute treat and was slightly unsure what to expect. So glad we did! Wonderful service from Katy and delicious selection of treats! Have never had such a hard decision deciding which tea to have but can highly recommend the China rose tea (don't forget to use the strainer though!).
Such lovely surroundings and ambiance.
Great value for money too :-)

unlimited tea and two servings of each section of your afternoon tea make up for the price, they also do a cheaper children's afternoon tea, a great selection of unusual teas.

Would be great as a romantic afternoon tea spot and right next to the free national railway museum!

We visited the Countess of York whilst on a visit to the Railway Museum. We pre-booked afternoon tea as a special treat. We were not disappointed. The décor is a throw back to a bygone age of the 1920's in the style of Downton Abbey. Beautifully presented in every way 'Afternoon Tea' was not a disappointment. We were offered a choice of teas, a selection of sandwiches ( with an offer of more if required) wonderful cakes and pasties all served by a delightful young lady who was very attentive and courteous. We also enjoyed a complimentary bottle of champagne due to a problem with our original booking. We enjoyed this sat outside in the sun and was a real treat. if you are planning a trip to the Museum I would highly recommend you book this treat.

Based on the fact that I'm a fan of Afternoon Tea and my husband is a fan of trains, the Countess of York seemed like the perfect way to spend a couple of hours in between shopping and a visit to the theatre. Easy to find (enter the museum and through the underpass) and set in a lovely courtyard just before the main hall. The train carriage itself is delightfully appointed with the sort of plush trappings one would expect. Fine china decorated with the Yorkshire rose and more silverware than you could shake a stick at.

We were greeted warmly and seated immediately, unfortunately we then had to wait at least 30 minutes before anyone returned to check on us. It became apparent that our tea order should have been taken early on as, when the stand of food arrived, it was sheepishly noted that we were beverageless. The tea arrived quickly after and we tucked in to our food. Unfortunately we were a little unsure as to what was what because, at the time the (white gloved and very well-presented waitress) was telling us the sandwich fillings and cake names, a passer-by decided to open the carriage door and hold a loud conversation with one of their friends who was sat at a table behind us - not exactly refined or relaxing.

The food was good, not amazing. I have had better in the city (at a place beginning with B!) - the bread on the sandwiches was dry, there's no getting away from it. Even my husband noticed and he's not usually as picky as me. We did eat at 4pm but even so, they shouldn't have been allowed to get dry. The fillings were nice but not fantastic - cream cheese, salmon and ham. Ditto the cakes and scones - all perfectly tasty but nothing to go mad about. The 'treacle tart' tasted nothing like and had far too much pastry for such a small piece. The Blackberry Posset was probably the nicest offering, though the spoon provided wasn't small enough to get to the bottom of the glass.

The total came to £39.90 and we made a point of waiting for the 10p change. Lovely idea but, in this instance, not executed with enough finesse to have won me over or to consider a return visit. Shame.
