Went for dinner mid week. Food has always been OK
and was on this occasion too. However the service was
diabolical. Why work there if you would rather be elsewhere?

I have had innumerable meals in The Olive Tree and never been disappointed.

The staff are very friendly and helpful and the service is excellent.

They have a well-stocked bar and do wonderful Irish coffees (and a collection of others).

The owner and manager are great to talk to and all the staff are attentive.

A great place to go, whether by yourself or in a large party.

The restaurant is also very "family friendly". :-)

Having heard a few people say they enjoyed The Olive Tree and wanting to try somewhere new we decided to try this place out on a Monday night before we headed off on holiday the next day. We arrived at 8pm having booked and were greeted and shown to our table next to a group of 4 despite the rest of the restaurant being empty. Once we had read through the menu we opted for the 2 course offer which seemed good value and had some nice sounding dishes (though nothing too exciting). We then ordered a bottle of wine and some water...the wine was very good quality but the water did not arrive. Our starters came (mushrooms on toast and a chorizo and crayfish risotto) which were delicious and our hopes were high! These were cleared and very quickly (too quickly to my mind) our main courses arrived (duck for me and a pasta dish for my boyfriend) and heres where things went downhill. The duck was luke warm with a very soggy unpleasant skin on it served with sweet potato mash, which felt like it had been sitting under hot lights, and a very sweet sauce making the whole dish very sickly sweet and distinctly average. The pasta dish was ok but really something either one of us could have made at home. Our mains were cleared and at this point any service to us stopped entirely...we were the only people in the restaurant by now and whilst one member of staff stood and read his newspaper in full view at the bar the other seemed to be doing anything other than serve us (getting ready to go home i suspect). After some time my boyfriend went to the toilet and said the guy reading his paper "its OK we didnt want dessert, we will have the bill" the sarcasm was lost on this man who managed to tear himself away from his paper long enough to bring our bill - no apology for the lack service. We then sat for another length of time with our card out ready to pay being ignored whilst the 2 staff chatted to a female colleague who had popped in. Eventually as we stood up to take our payment to them one rushed over and took our payment. The whole evening struck me as the 2 staff wanted to be anywhere but at work and we were nothing but an inconvenience...makes you wonder why they took our booking in the first place...we will not be going back as there are lots of places in York serving better food with MUCH better service.

We visited here some time ago and the problem was the service. The staff seemed uninterested and made us feel everything was an inconvenience. We tried again recently and exactly the same - this place needs a good restaurant a manager to keep the staff motivated.
