“Good but expensive”
Reviewed 11 November 2012

Hadn't been in the Punchbowl for a while so decided to visit for sunday lunch, could not fault the staff at all or the service no problem with that at all. After looking at the menu I couldn't help but notice how the prices had gone up, I only wanted soup and bread which wasnt bad at £3-50 but my husband chose venison sausages at £9-50. This came served with 3 sausages and a tiny amount of mash 2 onion rings and that was it. I have no complaints about the quality of the food but for the price I think they could have added some vegetables to my husbands meal. The Punchbowl is a lovely old pub with a good atmosphere but the price of the meals will make me think twice about eating there again.

“Good food, excellent well-kept beer, friendly staff”
Reviewed 10 November 2012

We called in for lunch today.
We have been several times before, but have not been for about 2 years, because the place seemed to have 'lost the plot' on food back then.
However, we decided to give it a try again, and we were very happy with the food, service and proper ales.

Will definitely visit again

“Brilliant!”
Reviewed 7 November 2012

Stopped off here for lunch after visiting the York Minster. A very attractive black and white timbered pub. Staff were welcoming and friendly. Landlord with a sense of humour (makes a change) even though very busy. The food was plentiful, well presented and delicious. The overall ambience was excellent and everywhere was spotless. Would definitely go there again and recommend to anyone visiting York.

“Yummy”
Reviewed 5 November 2012 via mobile

My family has visited York three times while one the way to the coast fora yearly sailing event thing. After looking around, shopping etc., we found this restaurant which a friend had recommended us. W were welcomed in to the seating at the back and ordered. The food arrived astonishingly quickly and I have to say the steak and ale pie was one of the best I've ever had. Apart from a slightly annoying air conditioning unit that blew in my face and would not stay off for more than a minute or two, I enjoyed the experience very much and would highly recommend a visit.

“Lovely city centre pub”
Reviewed 4 November 2012

We called in for a drink following a full shopping day. Initial thoughts were that it was a tiny bar although pleasant enough. It is small (ish) but has a much larger snug at the back of the main bar and a restauarant. The barman recommended a drink for me which was brilliant and we settled into the cosy atmosphere! Having watched a huge queue form, and be served quickly, we decided to have another drink and order some food. We were given a table within minutes and watched a succession of delicious looking meals being delivered to customers. Although there was a quick turnaround of customers and tables, we never once felt rushed - quite the opposite. The man running the restaurant was efficient, happy, jokey and consciencious! (the waitresses clearly enjoyed their work as they too were genuinly cheerful and willing to help!). We would DEFINATELY recommend this pub!
