Staff were really friendly, the decor was fantastic and food amazing. Both me and my husband would thoroughly recommend this pub and will definitely be going back again.

Booked for Sunday lunch on a recommendation of fellow foodies.
Decor sumptuous with the promise of good things.
Sunday lunch x 3 ordered. 1 pork 2 beef.
Billboard at the front of the pub states home cooked food which to my mind means from scratch. And cooked as opposed to microwaved! !!!
The lunch is £9.95 per head. This consists of a Yorkshire pudding, meat, 2 broccoli florets, approx 2 tbs mashed carrot and swede 3 roast pots and a very very poor representation by the parsnip family.
Unbeknown to us at the time is an earlier review about fatty meat. This was very sadly our experience too. The pork was approx 80% fat. Despite best efforts to locate any meat none or very little was to be had. If they were fresh homemade roast pots i apologise in advance but they had every hallmark of the frozen ones and were completely tasteless to boot. The parsnips were the surprise of the meal mostly as they were so small (no bigger than approx 10cm in length and 2cm in width closely resembling the debris found at the bottom of a frozen bag of parsnips they were an embarrassment to the plate.
The beef reheated was tough and unappealing. The pork was returned to the kitchen along with said dinner. The chap dealing with this was superb very friendly and apologetic but even he couldn't guarantee an improvement on the pork and so offered a chicken breast. This all arrived well after my family had eaten and without any doubt the chicken had been nuked in a microwave. Differing textures not an ounce of colour and completely taste less.
We had very high hopes for dining here and whilst I appreciate no one wishes to receive such a review spending money in restaurants as a family or in any circumstances should be a treat and enjoyable. There is nothing better than eating somewhere that you can't wait to go back to. This is sadly not the case for the oak. The chap who dealt with us was lovely and was genuinely shocked stating they had never received a complaint. Sadly even this isn't the truth!!!!
Another place ticked off the list sadly for good.

Stumbled across this place when in York and the staff were incredibly friendly. Food was ok but the atmosphere and service made it a worthy visit.

York has many restaurants and pubs so you are spoilt for choice. However, we struck lucky stopping here for lunch. It's nicely decorated, retaining its old world charm. We sat in a pleasant area at the back af the building. There is a good choice of hand pulled beers. We were served by a very welcoming waitress.I had a tasty chicken and bacon salad which I thoroughly enjoyed. I would return to the Royal Oak as the food, service and atmosphere were great.
