“Nicely presented but poor hotel”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 June 2013 via mobile

I'll start with the few positives. The staff were great, friendly polite and very helpful.
We booked in and was told that I've have to provide a card for room with 30 quid that would be returned if I didn't spend anything. Just felt it was unnecessary.
We had to pay 10 quid parking until 11 next day but behind the building is a public carpark were it was cheaper for longer.
The room was well decorated but very small with paper thin walls and without A/C so was very warm.
Just outside our window was a social club with a karaoke night on till stupid o'clock.
Overall it was just to expensive for what it actually was. Wouldn't recommend

Thank you for your comments.

It is Hotel 53 policy to take a pre-authorisation of £30 from a Credit/Debit card to guarantee that funds are available to cover any incidentals or charges that may be incurred during your stay, however, should you not wish to provide this, we can, as an alternative, take a £30 Cash Deposit, which is returned to you on check-out.

I would also suggest that, should you compare our pricing with that of similar hotels located centrally, that you would actually find our pricing quite favourable.

We arrived a bit early so our room was not ready (not a problem) so the friendly reception staff said we can leave our luggage in a locked room and if we wanted to return in a few hours the room will be ready. £10.00 parking across the road with allocated hotel bays - ideal!
Across the road is a Wetherspoons which is convenient for a pre evening out drink and breakfast. It took appox 5-10 mins slow walk to get to all the main bars, restaurants and of course Betty's Tea Room.
The hotel is modern, clean and away from any late night revellers. The rooms are again modern, clean and a fair size.
We would return here again and would recommend it to anyone visiting York.

loved this hotel, they make you feel welcome, room was lovely, all staff are friendly, nice warm rooms, very modern! very close to everything in york!
the down sides are, you have to park across from the hotel and pay £10 per night, and the restaurant is closed on an evening on a saturday and sunday which you would think would be the busiest time to have it open, but there is a weatherspoons straight across from the hotel so you not go hungry.

You have to park away from the hotel at a cost. Check in was quick and good, The room was small and cold, found the heater, the bed was pushed rite up to it. It was noisy with the traffic, I kept checking the windows to see if they were shut or a vent or something was open, the blinds are not very good at keeping the light out. The bed was hard and the pillows were hard The bedding was crisp and clean so too were the towels. Toiletries provided and so too tea and coffee
we did not eat there and we had breakfast at Witherspoons over the road, The location is ok a 10min walk and your in the town.

Having stayed in many hotels in York over the last 5-6 years, I highly recommended this hotel. It's central location and modern design make it the ideal place to stay during your York visit. Friendly and efficient staff. Clean, modern and very practical rooms made this an enjoyable stay. A lot of other comments on here about the price of the rooms, I booked on late rooms.com and paid under £100 per night including breakfast, it was cheaper than a Premier Inn and 10 times better. Car parking is in an NCP car park only 2-3 mins away, £10 per night was very reasonable and completely secure...

We stayed here on race day which would explain the high price. The rooms were basic but equipped with all the usual amenities i.e. TV, kettle and were clean, stylish and comfortable. We really didn't experience much within the hotel apart from the friendly desk service and the room. Good hotel, excellent location but was very expensive for what it is.

We were warmly greeted to the Hotel. The room was a good size for us and was very clean, we had our bed and towels changed daily. The bed is a good size and is comfortable. The walls are a bit thin so I did hear next door snoring, and the other guests coming back in the night.

One problem was when showering the water flooded the bathroom due to drainage issues, we mentioned it 3 times but they never seemed to be able to fix this BUT the did compensate us.

The English breakfast is one of the best breakfast buffets I have ever eaten (and I have stayed in 5* hotels) the quality if the food was top notch, (no cheap sausage or rubber scrambled egg!) Cant vouch for the continental, as we were on our honeymoon so we spoil t ourselves!

Our first night we asked the barman (guy with beard) about the things to do, and he went right out of his way to show us the things to do and where to go, both day and night (cheers mate)

This hotel is only 5 minutes walk to the lovely city of York so perfect for those who want to be close to every thing, and not have to use the car, while your here.
