Description: Our small-but-beautiful bistro is found on the busy and lively Gillygate in York. A street full of independent shops and businesses, it leads right into the heart of York through one of its ancient City gates. A traditional and cosy bistro front room that evokes the brasseries of Paris connects to a more spacious and lighter garden room at the rear. This in turn leads to our charming and secluded garden area adjoining the City Walls and basking in the glory of the fabulous York Minster. Whether you come for breakfast, for lunch, or an evening meal, the bistro provides a delightful setting for you to enjoy your meal. Ideal for romantic couples, families or large groups, Café No.8’s bistro offers simple, modern, quality food at excellent value. Make a reservation and see why we consistently appear in ‘top places to eat’ lists both locally and nationally.

We loved this restaurant during our recent visit to York. We sat in the cosy back garden and enjoyed delicious food, great service and a relaxed ambience. Would definitely return to this restaurant on our next visit to York.

After finding the cafe at Kings Manor closed for the day at about quarter to 4, we asked a student if there was anywhere else nearby serving tea and scones. He suggested that we try this cafe and gave us the address and directions. Once inside, we we were welcomed in and shown to the small conservatory at the back of the cafe, which overlooks a little garden. Soon, steaming pots of tea and freshly baked scones, which we had seen coming out of the oven on our way to the back, were presented. Served along with the scones was clotted cream as well as two different compotes (blueberry and rhubarb). So delicious ! Next time I visit York I will be sure to try lunch or dinner here. Thanks to that friendly student for steering us to Cafe no. 8 !

We had a family meal on Saturday night at No.8 expecting it to be as good as everyone has talked about. Four steaks were ordered plus a fish dish for main courses. The steaks ordered were requested 1 medium,2 rare and 1 medium rare. These arrived very well done, not just a bit over cooked, completely the opposite to what had been ordered. On highlighting this the 3 incorrectly cooked dishes were taken back to the kitchen, the other two people at the table continued eating. It took 37 (!!) minutes for the dishes to be returned to the table. The staff didn't seem to care and their attitude was not one of apology, just as if they were put out that we were not happy. They knocked a bottle of wine off the bill as compensation. The whole experience was ridiculous, we ate separately to the other two people we were with. I would never recommend or go back. It was an amateur operation and poor food and service.

I am very sorry about your poor experience.

No excuses, this should not have happened, the steaks should have been cooked correctly in the first place.

I'd like to offer a free meal to all of you in compensation, so we have a chance to prove that we are not overrated.

Again, I'm very sorry.

We've eaten here twice before and always been delighted by the quality of the food. It's a small, cramped, not very exotic restaurant close to the centre of the York, and their food is fantastic. I started with hake in coconut batter, followed by pig's cheek and roasted belly pork. It was amazing. But for those of you who are unhappy about eating meat, there are plenty of really imaginative vegetarian options.

Called early on Saturday night without a previous booking and got in just before the evening rush. Having eaten here a number of times before we knew what to expect. Small menu with well thought out and interesting dishes. Something for everyone - meat, fish and vegetarian. Decent choice of well priced wines. Friendly, helpful and unobtrusive staff. Pleasant surroundings.

Left 90mins later totally content after enjoying starters of hake and beef terrine, mains of lamb and belly pork, rounded off with posit and chocolate desserts. All totally delicious and well presented. £82 for 3 courses, wine and coffee. If you don't have a big appetite, two courses can be had for £25. Three excellent courses for £30. Fantastic value for money for food of this quality.

Cannot recommend highly enough, excellent food at a great price, in pleasant surroundings. What's not to like!
