“Miserable”
Reviewed 1 February 2014 via mobile

I know that you do not pay much for the food here but this is a customer facing service and as such the staff were miserable and unhelpful! When we arrived the place was half empty yet we were told there would be a half hour wait, the truth was no one was clearing any tables, in fact the staff didn't appear to be doing much at all. When we did go and get our food we again had to wait for the surly chef to appear. Then we were served a meagre ration of meat. The vegetables were soaked in grease, except for the cauliflower cheese that had little to no sauce. After our meal we looked at the dessert menu, again we were ignored. So we decided to go and pay our bill. The manager (also miserable) was on the phone and we assumed when she had finished she would serve us, no wrong again, even though she saw us she walked away. So we had to wait for another surly looking member of staff to come and get our bill! We thought they must be short staffed, but no we were told they were one man down. This is the tip if your job makes you that miserable go get another I'm sure Toby (not Toby jug) would not be at all happy to see this place!

Have been here a couple of times and it was good, yesterday though was a different story.

Waited for 20 minutes to be seated. A man (who I think was a manager) just kept peeking at us from over by a till, it was all a bit peculiar.

There was 1 waitress who kept apologising, she was rushed off her feet, she deserves a medal for the complaints she was fielding and everything she was doing - looks like the mamma genet let her down and she was in the firing line.

Anyway got seated and went to get the carvery.

No Turkey, Turkey Crackling or Roast Potatoes. No plates ready - the excuse was 'we were really busy at lunch time'. Pretty poor seeing as it was 8.15 I the evening.

So a toast dinner comprising of beef, mash and dried up vegetables.

The waitress - well done you managed well. Whatever that manager was doing, he kept hiding and peering at the restaurant from behind things - what on earth were you doing? Even my 8 year old daughter commented that it was weird.

This is the second time I have been to this Toby recently and I am very impressed with the service we've received both times, very friendly and helpful staff without being overbearing like some places. The food is slightly variable, but bear in mind this is a carvery not a Michelin star restaurant and you're only paying £5.99, the first trip the food was spot on, the second trip slightly less so, but still very good.

We were staying at the adjacent Travelodge and fancied trying this Toby Carvery for a change, having been to the other one in Northampton a few times in recent months when visiting relatives. We shouldn't have bothered.

We looked inside on Friday evening and it looked pretty dead, but we decided to give it a try the following day when with our relatives. We went for a pizza Friday instead.

We got to the Toby relatively late, at about 20:30, having had a busy day out. It ended up being a bit of a rush to get there with us all wanting to change/freshen up and our relatives driving from the other side of town to join us. We were two couples but it took staff all their time to seat, and serve us.

Staff were inattentive. No offer of another drink. More interested in cleaning other tables though there were few other customers. Beer wasn't brilliant. Wife's vegetarian dish poor though they did have all the options available. Confusion over ordering it and when it would be ready.

Carvery was poor. No beef or turkey as they had run out, so pork or gammon only (not much good for any Muslims). Meat dried out, veg all dried up. Gravy had a skin like a rhino and lumps in it. Difficult to get staff to serve ice cream as it seemed they just wanted to go home. It was cheap as we had a voucher, which was the only good thing I can say. I think we were the last ones in there at about 10pm. Felt like it was closing and they wanted us out.

Car park was dimly lit as we saw our relatives off. It could be so much better. The other Toby in Northampton is much better. If you want something to eat nearby head for Riverside retail park, just down A43 Lumbertubs Way. Pizza Hut there is excellent and we also passed a nice looking Mandarin Buffett that may be worth a try (Weston Favell).

The carvery is good price at just under £6.00. However on are visit the vegetables looked all dried up and unsightly. We asked for the dishes to be replenished - which they were. The first table offered still had food stains on it and the place mats had not be cleaned. So we choose another table. Ordered a toffee and shortbread cheese cake which looked like it had been throw on the plate. The shortbread tasty like uncooked crumble mixture. The general decor of the places is old and shabby and the toilets leave a lot to be desired.
