“Wedding headache!!!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 December 2013

Recently held our wedding here. Chose the the walnut tree due to its intimate atmosphere and old style and function room which was the perfect size for the amount of guests we invited, plus the outstanding food that is always served... thats where our good points end... the so called wedding co ordinator caroline can not and should not be in charge of organising anyones special day!! Continuous mistake after mistake in the run up to our day, despite us having to be in contact constantly to keep rectifying the first mistakes!! Room bookings were not changed when we asked... despite us checking FIVE times over and being told it was fine... guests turned up day before wedding to be told there was no room booked for them causing much distress... only for my fiancè to have to sort it all out AGAIN!! invoices were wrong and repeatedly messed up and once again had to be sorted by us. The whole stressful run up to our big day was made 100% worse by carolines incompetence! With not one word of apology from her either, very arrogant and above herself and really needs to come down to earth when dealing with people spending so much money at the venue! So be warned if you have a wedding booked here!
The one outstanding member of staff there was Tina. She couldn't do enough to help us and relieve the stress we were under the day before the wedding... without doubt she should be dealing with the wedding organising in future!
Tina thankyou so much.
we did eventually have an amazing day!!

We enjoyed a lovely over night stay
The evening dinner was exceptional as was the hospitality
The bedroom was comfortable and quite
Breakfast was something special
Both meals were cleverly cooked with sensible portions with great taste and well presented
Would like to go back when music is on as they have an interesting programme

Room Tip: Front if you are keen on trains back if not

We were slightly worried about staying here. It is an old railway hotel (the station itself went courtesy of Dr Beeching) and the line is just over the road.

We needn't have worried. Modern double glazing reduces the passing trains to a barely noticeable susurration and, like most old railway hotels, it is a spacious place; nicely decorated to our eyes, too. Okay, the floors creak a bit as you walk across them and the rooms have those "carved out" proportions you get where a bathroom has been created, and the bathroom could do with some retouching of the paint here and there. But it's all clean, nice and pleasant.

The food was very good. Dinner had an interesting menu (foie gras starter, for example) and the cooked breakfast was really tasty: delicious eggs and flavoursome bacon.

But if that wasn't enough, the service from the staff was great. We had to leave before breakfast was officially available - but the staff came in early to see to it. The lounge we were having coffee in the night before was right next to the bar, where some very excited small children were making themselves known - and the staff came along and closed off the connecting door, to give us peace and quiet. And everyone, from receptionist to bar staff and waitresses seemed really friendly. Now that really stood out.

If you are staying in the Northampton area, this place will give the national chains more than a run for their money. Well worth trying.

Room Tip: As in any hotel, rooms away from the public areas are bound to be quieter.

This is by no means a bad hotel, the food was good and the room was adequate. I did feel the room could have been looked after and maintained a bit better, a few loose screws and a notably absence of anywhere to put toiletries in the shower cubicle show a lack of care and attention.
The biggest issue as mentioned by others is the noise from the Virgin trains which are very close, moving at high speed and very regular. In fairness it's not the hotels fault and they have taken the trouble to provide you with earplugs but being woken up at 4am (and I'm a heavy sleeper) is not great!.
The staff are ok and overall I would rate this hotel as average to good.

Visited on 12 Oct with friends for a meal. Good service and the food was well presented and cooked and good value. The only criticism I have is the menu is not very extensive and there are no specials.

Absolutely filthy room and en-suite. The valance sheet around base of bed must have been left unwashed for months..white with dust and covered in stains. Everywhere was just so dusty. The bathroom floor was the dirtiest I've ever seen in a B + B. I wiped my hand across it and it was thick with human hair and dirt..unbelievable.Shower tray filthy and no hot water for showers in the morning..not just our room but others in our group who were staying. The breakfast was average but staff very friendly. Wouldn't recommend or stay here again. Trainline so close and very noisy, all in all a pretty awful place to stay.

Room Tip: Choose room at the back of venue if you must stay here, but then you get all the smells from smoking...
