“Avoid at all costs”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 January 2014

We had the misfortune of attending a family function at the Frog and Fiddler, Northampton, when it was hired for a Christening celebration and buffet on a Saturday afternoon before Christmas. On arrival we discovered that the car park was being run by a private company, sub-let or leased by the brewery, Marstons who are the owners. Parking tickets are purchased from a machine, and the money refunded in the pub, apparently to prevent shoppers from using the pub car park, thus preventing the hoards of regulars (about 5 on this occasion) from parking cars at their local. Having placed a 2-hour ticket on our car, we presented this to the bar-staff for a refund. We enjoyed the celebration as best we could, regularly returning to the bar either to buy drinks or to request that glasses are exchanged for clean ones, which the staff grudgingly did.
I was a bit surprised, some two-weeks later, to receive a letter from the parking company with a fine for £100, although it seems that we had inadvertently exceeded the time limit on our parking ticket by a few minutes.
My immediate reaction was to appeal this, as did others, on the grounds that we were all at a private function, none of us had left the premises, and all of us were using the pub's facilities, where were also spending our hard-earned cash. I also felt that a £100 fine, for a few minutes overstay, was an unreasonable and aggressive demand, particularly when you can pay for a full day's parking for £20 . Again I objected.
I felt then that my best course of action was simply to speak to the pub manager, who was present during the function, and who we felt could verify that this was indeed an honest oversight on the part of some of us, and who we believed had the authority to request that the parking company simply cancel the charges. He responded with a flat refusal, and did not even attempt to resolve this for us.
As a consequence, we will ensure that no further family functions are held at the Frog and Fiddler.
