Visited first time since the refurb and they have made a good job of things-very horse and hound.Pricey drinks with not a great selection.Have not tried the food but not sure I want to pay £6.50 for a panini.Certainly an improvement on the old County though.

Had Sunday lunch at The County Hotel in Hexham on 3rd November 2013 - its first Sunday trading. It became very busy whilst we were there and the food was excellent. The staff were attentive. I am certain that The County's reputation will grow now that the whole place has had a major and very stylish refurb. Things are evolving there, when I walked in I was amazed at the transformation and discovered that the bedrooms look stylish and en-suite. I wish Ben well. This is a place that really deserves to excel.

I was very impressed with the new layout, furnishings and general decor. A revamp was certainly needed and has been achieved to a very high standard. I came just to have lunch and felt immediately relaxed, enjoyed such a big choice of seating area. I did not get what I ordered but was part way through eating before I realised so did not complain. The menu could have been better with more vegetables included in the items. Quality of food was good.

First things, first...ignore any reviews dated before October 2013. Right....

Things are beginning to happen in Hexham. It has been a bad few years with some important shops closing down, but now empty shops are reopening. There is a new jewellery shop in St Mary's Chare to keep probably the best independent bookshop in the area (Cognito) company; Milletts are re-opening and Costa is about to arrive in a quite 'busy' market for coffee shops. There is a splendid new south Asian restaurant and now...the County Hotel.

The old County has been closed for some time giving a slightly forlorn air to that end of town but now after a massive investment, Hexham has a new hotel, restaurant and pub.

It is a work in progress...the staff cheerfully acknowledge that they are learning and the menus and the bar 'offer' will evolve...but they have got much right in their first week. The main bar was very busy but comfortable on a Friday evening. The rooms can accomodate couples up to large groups without anyone feeling crowded. The decor is obviously new and the pictures of regency dandies and hunting scenes may not be quite 21st century but they can be ignored. The range of beers on offer could be developed as they get to understand their market and the restaurant menu is pretty basic but, and it must be emphasised, this is early days and there is a sense they have been overwhelmed by the local response.

This is going to be a good pub for lunchtimes and in the evening. The staff are enthusiastic, friendly, welcoming...they know that they are part of an experiment and they give every indication that that want it to work...for their customers.

So come for a drink, experience the great atmosphere...already...have a meal (I can't comment at present). Just enjoy a great time in a pub and restaurant which might herald better times for Hexham. It will get better, but it's pretty good already.
