“BRIEF STAY AT SLALEY”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 April 2014

Another good few days at Slaley in a lodge. Weather quite good with sun on two days but a very cold wind. Hadrian's Brassiere good but Claret Jug very very poor. Golf course in superb condition and so green staff must be congratulated. New golfing pro very good and an excellent teacher.

We booked a 3 bed lodge for two nights with my son, daughter, partners & twin grandchildren to attend a wedding at Slaley Hall.
The lodge was spotless & had every amenity necessary with a beautiful view across the Derwent Valley from a living room balcony area.
It was not toddler friendly for our grandchildren with open stairs from the kitchen area up to the living area & up to the master bedroom so we had to have eyes in the back of our heads to watch them 24/7. There was only one baby gate fitted.
The lodge was heated with electric heaters in all rooms and we found the cost of electricity was very expensive. We paid approx £37 for two nights and didn't have heaters on in some of the rooms

Situated in the Northumberland countryside and surrounded by 2 golf courses, there is lots of outdoor activities available. Great walking area with 2 reservoirs close by.

On site facilities well maintained. Lodges have everything needed (budget for additional electricity charges!!).

Good spa and leisure facilities.

Nothing off site close so transport recommended.

The lodges at Slaley are excellent. Beautifully presented and great accommodation. The facilities within them are really good and would highly recommend staying there. We had a 4 bed, 4 bathroom lodge and staying there was relaxing, very private and in a lovely location.

However, we stayed for Christmas and so booked Christmas Lunch and Boxing Day in the hotel itself (Slaley Hall). From our initial enquiry, the service was really bad. Just dealing with the sales office in the hotel itself is a nightmare. People promised to call back, e-mail etc and didn't. If I hadn't already booked and paid for a lodge then I would have given up and gone elsewhere. Christmas lunch at the hotel was extremely disappointing in every way - food quality was poor, service was not good, there were no Christmas decorations at all in the brasserie itself and the chairs were really uncomfortable on a table next to the kitchen door, which was like a wind tunnel.

Our experience in the hotel was only redeemed by two people. Michael on reception early Christmas afternoon - he was really helpful, extremely pleasant and went out of his way to be accommodating. Also, Milo in the 19th bar - he made our boxing day visit for food and drinks a great one! The 19th bar is much better than the brasserie and the service was 100% better here so if you are looking for somewhere to eat within the hotel, then this is the place. It was only bar food but was all we were looking for.

Overall, the lodges are great. Jen on the resort desk is fab and I would highly recommend staying here for a relaxing get away. If you want somewhere to eat, then I would recommend avoiding the brasserie. Next time, we would book a restaurant/pub outside of the hotel as I understand there are many options in the surrounding area.

Visited in October half term 2013. Lodge was very well appointed, especially liked the Bang and Olufsen TV. A little chilly due to the electric storage heaters and fears of huge bill but otherwise super. The estate is lovely and we really enjoyed whizzing around on a golf buggy.

The outdoor adventures people were very good and we hired bikes and proved out "crack shot" capabilities which were both excellent fun but a bit pricey. The pool and spa facilities were OK - pool ad air temp could have been warmer to promote a but more lolling around, but the kids really enjoyed the space.

Only downside was Hadrian's restaurant. It all started very well and the food was good but we had to wait 50 minutes between main and desert which is no fun with an 8 and 10 year old. My kids know how to behave in nice restaurants and they did well but it was simply too long. We did ask nicely if they could find our deserts a couple of times only to be ignored. Eventually the manager got involved and we were looked after, including no charge being made for the desert which was appreciated, but it did spoil our meal together.

Overall I would definitely advise a visit if you want a relaxing stay in a nice lodge with a few outdoor things to do.
