Owner description: Visit Roman Vindolanda today and you will find one of the North East’s most famous and not to be missed tourist attractions lying in the beautiful landscape of Hadrian's Wall Country. Formerly a key military post on the northern frontier of Britain, Vindolanda is the home of Britain's 'Top Treasure' - the Vindolanda Writing Tablets - and is one Europe's most important Roman archeological sites, with live excavations taking place every year. The recently fully refurbished on site museum provides a breathtaking exploration of the Trust's ongoing discoveries and accounts of Roman life. There are no other places on earth where it is possible to experience Roman Britain, Hadrian's Wall and history coming to life before your very eyes all in one space! Come and explore it for yourself and find out why Vindolanda is treasured worldwide.

Really glad we stopped to explore the ruins here. The site is still an active dig, and the ruins and museum give you a really great impression of what it must have been like 1800 years ago.

Well documented and presented museum and excavation. Easy to find and the staff were very helpful, even when treating wasp stings obtained while having a coffee outside.
Good priced cafe and high priced entry, which I didn't mind considering the size of the site and its museum offerings. A recommended visit if you are in the area and a passing or above interest in history.

Vindolanda was a large Roman fort near Hadrian's Wall and today gives a very good picture of life along the Roman Wall, thanks to the extensive excavations which are being carried out. Vindolanda wasn't just a military fortress but there was a village beside it, where soldiers' families, craftsmen, merchants and slaves lived. I thought the entrance hall was delightful with its open atrium and little fountain, showing how it must have been to live in a Roman villa. There are reconstructions of the Wall, which was first made of wood and later of stone and it is possible to go inside these and look out over the surrounding countryside. The ruins within the fort show how the soldiers lived, with the military headquarters, the commander's house and the barracks, as well as storage areas for grain, and the bath house (looking over a steep hillside). There is also an open air museum, with the replicas of a small decorative temple, a shop and a dwelling house, set in a lovely steep, wooded garden with a stream. There is also a museum, showing various finds, pottery, tools, textiles and jewellery as well as footwear, many of the shoes with decorative patterns on the soles, picked out in studs - giving a very human picture of daily lifewww. There is a gift and bookshop here. Having visited the Roman Army Museum earlier in the day, I found that this museum not only gave supplementary information on how it must have been to be a soldier, living at "The edge of Empire", so remote, but how it must have been for the villagers, dependent on the fortress for their daily life. A fascinating place, altogether.

Vindolanda is my favourite Roman site in the UK. The archeological excavations are ongoing and thanks to the lack of oxygen in the soil they have found the most amazing artefacts - not just the famous writing tablets but thousands more that will give you an insight into everyday Roman life in the Border region. It's not all stones and weapons, there are for example beautiful jewellery and endless amounts of leather shoes, even a child's sock. Exciting discoveries are made all the time (you can join them as a volunteer, and there are affordable family summer digs), only 3 years ago they found the remains of a girl who is believed to have been murdered about 1,800 years ago.

Very interesting, although I think our experience was better having gone to the Roman Army Museum just before. This is very much a ruins and an ongoing archeological site, so it does help to have some context of the way of life to understand what you are looking at, at times. This site is not right on the Wall, but predates the wall by about 80 years, which in itself is interesting. Make time to see it along with the other Hadrian's Wall sites, its well worth it.
