Owner description: Visit Roman Vindolanda today and you will find one of the North East’s most famous and not to be missed tourist attractions lying in the beautiful landscape of Hadrian's Wall Country. Formerly a key military post on the northern frontier of Britain, Vindolanda is the home of Britain's 'Top Treasure' - the Vindolanda Writing Tablets - and is one Europe's most important Roman archeological sites, with live excavations taking place every year. The recently fully refurbished on site museum provides a breathtaking exploration of the Trust's ongoing discoveries and accounts of Roman life. There are no other places on earth where it is possible to experience Roman Britain, Hadrian's Wall and history coming to life before your very eyes all in one space! Come and explore it for yourself and find out why Vindolanda is treasured worldwide.

What an excellent place to get a real sense of the scale and complexity of the Roman occupation. A real sense of the bleakness and silence surrounding the area. The excavations are extensive. The information is very clear and accessible. The museum is well organised and tells the story very well. The 'writing tablets' deserve the title of the best treasure in Britain - an amazing find.

Spent a few pounds in the shop but didn't make use of the tea room - it was a bit early on !

Great place to wander round and take in the history. Lots of very well informed staff on hand to help our too.

Got a combined ticket for the Roman Army Museum 7 miles down the road ....

Outstanding Roman fort and settlement and museum . Very good museum, excellent research and displays. The museum part is a major modern building with a good café. The site is spread over a large area and includes ruins of forts and village from Roman era . Around 1200 Roman troops here at its peak and a village. A large garrison and village, supplying troops and provisions to Hadrian`s wall . The fort is near a sheltered valley where probably crops were grown away from the bleak moorland areas .Some of Vindolanda was discovered in the Victorian era and much more following pioneering work from 1937 and especially from the 1960s onwards. Yet more being discovered each year by active professionally led teams. They reckon there might be 100 years of excavation and conservation here. If you want to volunteer for a few days or more there is also good on site accommodation. One of the MUST see sights in England . Vindolanda name is likely to a mix of Celtic Gwyn/wyn meaning white and landa meaning land... thus land white with crops rather than moorland.

Friends in Northumberland suggested Hadrian's Wall and this site after finding I was keen on UK Roman fort history. Do visit the museum first before touring the site as it's very helpful and provides you with more insight. The artifacts within are astounding. The trek up the hill was quite a walk, but then again, it's a ruin and expected and too much for a couple of people in my party. More excavating is being done at the site and plan to return in a few years to see what progress they've made. My only complaint is the car park; a very steep hill to go up/down for anyone over 60!

Fantastic site of a Roman fort and colony. Well worth a visit as the site is extensive with an excellent museum in which to view what has been excavated from the site.
