Owner description: Visit Roman Vindolanda today and you will find one of the North East’s most famous and not to be missed tourist attractions lying in the beautiful landscape of Hadrian's Wall Country. Formerly a key military post on the northern frontier of Britain, Vindolanda is the home of Britain's 'Top Treasure' - the Vindolanda Writing Tablets - and is one Europe's most important Roman archeological sites, with live excavations taking place every year. The recently fully refurbished on site museum provides a breathtaking exploration of the Trust's ongoing discoveries and accounts of Roman life. There are no other places on earth where it is possible to experience Roman Britain, Hadrian's Wall and history coming to life before your very eyes all in one space! Come and explore it for yourself and find out why Vindolanda is treasured worldwide.

This has been on my list of places to see before I die for some time and when I finally realised I wasn't getting any younger I decided it was time I finally went to it. It didn't disappoint me at all. The fort and village itself is amazing to wander around and there is even more to be excavated (like Pompeii). In the museum the artefacts they have unearthed defy belief. Leather shoes which have been buried for 200 years are one example. The other stunning exhibits are the tablets with personal messages on them - an early form of texting perhaps?? If you are in the area go there, it's fantastic. Small tip - if you visit the Roman Army Museum get the combined ticket and save some money.

Oh my goodness, what a fantastic place, we first visited The Roman Army museum and were greeted by a lovely lady who talked us through what was at this site, she also recommended purchasing the joint ticket to include Vindolanda, at first we were a little sceptical but oh my goodness were we glad we took her advice, the museum is really well laid out and contains lots of interesting information etc, we then moved on to Vindolanda, oh my what a fantastic place this is, just outstanding lots to see here both on the site and once again a fantastic indoor display of thing stat have been excavated, the tablets are worth the visit alone, what a find and the most exciting thing here s that the excavations are ongoing, you really must visit this wonderful place, in terms of value for money we would have paid twice the amount, but instead left a donation, thank you all who work on both these sites, an absolutely unforgettable experience, we will definitely be back.

Still being excavated Vindolander must be one of the best preserved Roman settlements in the UK. Well worth a stroll around the site and to the museum with a small café and garden. Good Out door footwear required. Buy a join ticket for the Roman Army Museum also well worth a visit and not too far away.

What an excellent place to get a real sense of the scale and complexity of the Roman occupation. A real sense of the bleakness and silence surrounding the area. The excavations are extensive. The information is very clear and accessible. The museum is well organised and tells the story very well. The 'writing tablets' deserve the title of the best treasure in Britain - an amazing find.

Spent a few pounds in the shop but didn't make use of the tea room - it was a bit early on !

Great place to wander round and take in the history. Lots of very well informed staff on hand to help our too.

Got a combined ticket for the Roman Army Museum 7 miles down the road ....
