Owner description: Lying in magnificent countryside next to a sweeping section of Hadrian's Wall and based at the site of Carvoran Roman Fort, the Roman Army Museum is an authentic and dramatic tribute to Rome’s extraordinary military legacy. Step into the life of a Roman soldier and experience life on the front line of Emperor Hadrian’s formidable British frontier. Explored through reconstructions, objects excavated along Hadrian's Wall and the Vindolanda Trust’s inspiring interpretations of army life including the exclusive 3D Edge of Empire film, the museum pays unforgettable homage to Rome's military accomplishments in Britain.

This is a state of the art museum. Whether you know a lot about this era or nothing at all this place is very instructive. Make sure to watch the excellent 3D film.

(a separate review of Vindolanda left)

We went to Vindolanda first and felt it fantastic. Unfortunately the museum, as others have said, is a bit of a let down.

£10 for a joint ticket represents great value and I'd feel we had great value for that price and seeing both attractions if they were billed as the same thing on a split site. However the Vindolanda Trust advertises as 2 attractions so it's on that basis I am reviewing it.

The building has obviously cost a lot of money and has been slickly and neatly done but is a bit of style over substance. The space given over to the canteen, seating and gift area was out of proportion to the exhibits.

The 3D film was extremely good and it is no surprise to hear it won an award. My only suggestion (as for Vindolanda) would be to cover more of the history before the stone fort and a 3D animation of how each grew and were then built over would have really helped. Highly recommended though.

The rest is a bit empty really with little there of substance and felt a bit kid orientated in places. Nothing wrong with that but with little else of substance just a bit of a let down.

Overall more style over substance and should really be billed as a split site with Vindolanda rather than a separate attraction. I certainly would not recommend going here only but it is a useful addition to the main site.

£10 still represents very good value to support a unique site but the Museum really doesn't warrant being considered a standalone attraction.

Excellent attraction, not to be missed, have never spent so long reading and look at everything at a museum, most enjoyable, thoroughly informative, extremely well laid out and very good exhibits, etc, loved the classroom which I am sure all children will be fascinated by, very friendly and helpful staff. Paid for a joint ticket for this and Vindolanda, excellent value for money.

This is the museum that should be visited after visiting Vindolanda. It portrays the loves of Roman soldiers, their ranks, their families and the battles over the hundreds of years of Roman rule in England. The visual presentations are vivid and very informative - there are loads of activities for children, too. Have a visit to Hadrian's Wall and be sure to visit Vindolanda. A very good experience, well organised and presented.

We enjoyed the 3D film and enjoyed looking at the exhibits.
We also visited the Roman Vindolanda which was great and had a lovely cafe.
When we paid for this we had free entry into Roman Army Museum.
Well worth a visit, great for children too.
