Owner description: Lying in magnificent countryside next to a sweeping section of Hadrian's Wall and based at the site of Carvoran Roman Fort, the Roman Army Museum is an authentic and dramatic tribute to Rome’s extraordinary military legacy. Step into the life of a Roman soldier and experience life on the front line of Emperor Hadrian’s formidable British frontier. Explored through reconstructions, objects excavated along Hadrian's Wall and the Vindolanda Trust’s inspiring interpretations of army life including the exclusive 3D Edge of Empire film, the museum pays unforgettable homage to Rome's military accomplishments in Britain.

The Roman Army Museum is an excellent place to start if you don't know much about the Roman Army, Hadrian's Wall or the Roman Empire in general. There is a cafe, shop, picnic area, toilets and parking (for those visiting the museum). It's a great place for children, but an excellent starting point for visitors of any age. There are plenty of visual displays and some "hands-on" activities for children too. The new 3D film is wonderful and really brings your imagination to life, helping to explain what life must have been like for men stationed on the wall. My personal favourite is the holographic tutor in the School Room, his lecture takes about 20 minutes but is well worth it! It is also worth purchasing the discount ticket to visit both The Roman Army Museum and Vindolanda, they compliment each other very well and are a good place to start your journey of discovery along Hadrian's Wall. I visited at the time of the Festival of "Rosalia" in late May, when in the past Roman soldiers would have paid tribute to fallen comrades and they decorated their chariots and and dwellings with roses - It was lovely to see the museum was also decorated, keeping up the tradition and were even giving paper roses out at the time of my visit. In a small way it again helped to bring the wall to life and made me feel as if I also could still take part in the old tradition and pay my respects too.

First time back in years and it has improved a great deal. The museum is a fun way to learn, especially for children, as it is very hands on. Tie it in with Vindolanda for a great day out

For somewhere located seeminly in the middle of nowhere this Museum rivals plenty you will see in major cities. Great 3D video presentation and the museum is well laid out and far bigger than first thought. An excellent place to visit before walking the wall as it will give you more perspective of what you are walking along, over and past.
Great little coffee / gift shop and the staff where all really friendly.
Definately worth visiting.
