“Wish we'd stayed two nights”
Reviewed 16 May 2014

We stayed here last night and i'm home with stiff legs and throbbing feet but i wanted to leave my review. We'd stayed the day before at Alston YHA but we wished we'd booked ninebanks for two nights instead. We had the whole hostel to ourselves. Lovely welcome, comfy beds (with proper duvet cover and sheet (not sheet sleeping bag), nice new bathroom facilties with good shower, well equipped kitchen (again looked new) with everything you could need. Two kettles, four slice toaster, microwave etc. Lots of seating and a couple of tables outside (and a BBQ too). The little shop within the hostel was well stocked with a good selection for walkers who don't want to carry too much with them - including beer/wine. We were so worn out we didn't take much advantage of the facilities. A little about the area. Depending where you're going to pass through note there is a community shop (with a very good selection, inlcuding hot snacks) and toilets at Nenthead and a small shop/cafe (a little more pricey) at Whifield Hall.

If i had to pick fault (which is hard) I was standing starkers in the bathroom when i noticed there was no net/blind at the window so anyone who happened to be coming along the road would have got an eyeful!! ha ha. Also, a little drop of fresh milk would have been nice for a welcome drink.

Thank you very much to Pauline and hopefully we'll be back soon.

Ooops sorry about the window I have the net to replace the broken blind I'll put it up today!
I'm really pleased you enjoyed your stay, and hope you'll be back with the rest of your family and never mind 2 nights come for a week!

This hostel is in most fantastic location. It is small, cosy very comfortable ideal for family and friends gathering as we did. Rooms are lovely with full facilities in most. A perfect place for a retreat, the welcome was lovely by the owner, what more could you ask for!

An amazingly peaceful place, complete with rare birds in the fields, friendly wardens (plus amicable cats and dogs!), en-suite dormitories, and a log fire of course. The only down-side is the baffling refusal to provide adequate parking (there is space only for two vehicles), but blame the YHA rather than the wardens for that one. Worth it for a spot of 'splendid isolation'.

I'm really pleased you enjoyed your stay here and thank you for taking time to review Ninebanks. For future visits there is actually more parking alongside the manager's cottage and in front of the garage so there's room for cars, minibuses and the occasional coach. We always point people to the nearest spaces and it didn't occur to me to mention the other parking. look forward to seeing you here again.

We were given a very warm welcome on arrival and shown to a very pleasant en-suite room
( which I think is unusual for a YHA). The kitchen was large enough and well kitted out, with a supply of those 'odds and ends' for cooking which one usually forgets to bring. Having read the review by patmacnz I wondered what we would encounter - but it was not 'run down', and there was a large dining area next to the kitchen with a good supply of opening windows as well as the window in the kitchen. True, there was no smoke alarm in the kitchen, but the smoke alarms were in both adjacent rooms where one would expect them to be. The location is excellent and wonderful views; nearby is the pretty village of Allendale with it's micro brewery and award winning beers - stocked by Ninebanks. The daughter of the proprietor has put together a 'Mohope walk' which was great fun.
My wife and I are looking forward to our next visit.

Room Tip: Ask if the ensuite is available.

Ninebanks is, I believe, one of the two quietest places in England as there is no through road and it is not under a flight path. When you step out of the former lead miner's cottage onto the patio you have stunning views of the Mohawk valley. I have been going for 17 years and never tire of the view or the coziness of the hostel. The family who run it are very welcoming and have upgraded the hostel so it has all the mod cons though, thankfully, no television. I have had some great evenings there playing games with other hostellers from myriad parts of the world. In summer there is a tempting swimming hole in the Mohawk River. The whole place you won't want to leave.

Room Tip: I like the larger room above the common room.

Ninebanks Youth Hostel is a stunning little hostel that used to be a miners lodge and reflects the history of this area that is often not seen as it is now an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Geopark. The welcome we received from the hostel managers was so friendly. We bought local beer (brewed in the adjacent valley) from their little shop in the hostel and were treated to a lit fire. The family rooms are great. I didn't know youth hostels were so nice. The bathrooms are great, and ensuite, it looks really new. We loved our time there and exploring this valley and portion of the North Pennines was an unexpected delight. Highly recommend.

Room Tip: Any of the rooms - they're all named after local minerals!

Was not the best YHA we stayed at on a 3mth UK holiday. The facilities in the room were quite new, but the room is right next to the dining room. When it is full of people the dragging of chairs on the floor really makes it hard to enjoy being there. The kitchen was really basic with no extraction for cooking. So when you have idiots burning food and having a fry up the smell and smoke has no-where to go except into the bedrooms. There were no windows that would open to let the smoke out. Also we did not hear a smoke alarm go off - maybe there is not one which is a bit dangerous. Perfect YHA for those who just want to be in the middle of no-where and don't care where they stay.

I'm really sorry you didn't enjoy your stay. I wasn't aware that noisy chairs could be heard in the bedroom I'll try to add soft feet to the chairs and see if that muffles the sound.
Don't worry we do have a fire alarm system. In the kitchen is a rate of rise detector (heat) as a smoke detector would have the hostel evacuated every time anyone burned the toast.. The system is regularly checked and serviced and is very effective.
All the bedrooms and the kitchen have new sash windows all of which open as we prefer to choose low tech solutions where possible in line with our environmental policy. I'm sorry that on this occasion it didn't appear to be successful.
Thank you for bringing these points to my attention.
