“One of two sites you should definitely visit on the Wall”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 December 2011

This site is quite spread out, in a picturesque location, and has an interesting museum. Well worth a visit.

The first thing to comment upon is the museum. Whilst it suffers from its cramped conditions and layout, you could easily spend 45 minutes looking at the artefacts and reading the notes about each item.

The second interesting thing about the site is the different buildings - houses, barracks, baths etc. The baths are in particularly interesting, as is the view at the river where you can clearly see where the wall used to travel to the river, and continue across the other side.

If you have visited lots of Roman history, you may be less impressed by this site. We enjoyed it.

“Brilliant finds (in museum), but really needs bringing into the 21st Century”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 November 2011

This site is a 'must see' if you are a Roman history enthusiast, primarily for the Bath House down by the river. The remains of the fort are similar to many others along the wall, though somewhat lacking in interpretation, such that the visitor gets no real sense of the overall story. Although the museum contains a veritable treasure trove of Roman finds, particularly altars, everything is presented in the manner of a Victorian museum with masses of stones and statues, with cabinets full of numbered items. Desperately needs bringing into the 21st Century as visitors rightly expect so much more in the way of historical interpretation these days.

The site has the potential to be so much more than it currently is, but of course, that will take quite a lot of money. Definitely worth a visit though.

“Opening times?”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 November 2011

If one has a range of other things to do, you may arrive when the Visitor Centre is closed. But you can still gain access to the Roman fort, although one or two gates are locked. Long may this continue.
