Brackenlea is the ideal country getaway. The town of Harbottle couldn't be more picturesque nestled in the foothills of the drakestone, within the borders of the national park. The cottage is excellently equipped with a treasure trove of information to keep even the most experienced of explorers busy, the OS explorer maps were great for finding the best trails. About a 20 minute drive from the cottage is Cragside (free for national trust members) a stunning example of a 19th century manor surrounded by some of the most stunning grounds I'd ever seen. Accompanied with a maze several lakes and cafe there's something there for everyone. All in all our stay at Brackenlea couldn't have been better and I would recommend it to everyone, I'll certainly be booking it again one day.
An excellent cottage in a convenient and beautiful location. Clean and tidy, really well equipped and very comfortable. Lots of walks nearby and the lovely town of Rothbury is easy to get to (The Narrow Nick micro pub is great!). Will definitely stay here again.
We have spent a fantastic week at Brackenlea. A beautifully presented, immaculate cottage which comfortably accommodates a family of 4. Sean even offered to split the king size bed into 2 singles for our 2 children which was really thoughtful. The cottage was so clean and well equipped, we didn't need to use the extra things we brought along with us. So many little extra touches to help the holiday run smoothly and feel like home from home such as hairdryer, iron and clothes airer, cleaning products, tea towels and cloths and a nice little welcome pack. Thank you for thinking of these things, they really do make such a difference!
We enjoyed fabulous walks to the Drake Stone and Harbottle castle from the front door. The friendly farmer up the road invited the children to come back to feed the lambs, how lovely! The quaint little pub/shop next door serves local ales and the yummy Hepple gin, definitely worth a try! We bought a bottle to take home from Thropton shop.
The cottage is set in idyllic surroundings with stunning views from all around and is well placed to enjoy trips out to the coast, walks in the national park/Cheviots, Cragside, Hadrian's Wall and Kielder. We packed so much into a week here but feel that there is still so much to discover. Very sad to leave but this is one place we will endeavour to return to.
Had a lovely 4 night stay at Brackenlea. Cottage has everything you could need. Comfy bed, wifi, well stocked kitchen. The area is perfect. Walks start from the doorstep (Drake Stone) and following the River Coquet. Further away are the Simonside and Cheviots. Would receommend.
Harbottle is a pretty village with a small quirky pub. The house was in a lovely position with great views and walking from the doorstep. It was very comfortable, clean and well equipped. We had a great week and had some fantastic walks. The Cheviots are absolutely beautiful and completely unspoilt. We also spent a day at the coast and walked from Beadnall to Craster, stopping at Low Newton for lunch. A great day, beautiful beaches and a castle en route! Our dog loved it too!
Brackenlea cottage is just wonderful! The cottage itself is well presented and the owner Sean was very helpful before and during our booking. The kitchen had everything needed for a short stay, the beds were comfy and the living room was cosy with the fan heater fireplace. The large selection of books and DVDs were a bonus as were the welcome crisps and biscuits after a drive from London.
The village is very small (the nearest shop is about 8 miles away) so come prepared for your stay where possible. The local pub opens in the evenings only, we popped in for a drink but no food is served here. The walk to Drakes Stone was a nice way to pass an hour or two and the views are lovely.
We would highly recommend this cottage and would definitely visit again (maybe during summer when the rain will not lessen the chances of star gazing so much).
We have just got back from a wonderful weekend at BrackenLea Cottage,
We had a great time, visiting friends from the area, walking eating and drinking,
The cottage had everything you could need, there were four adults staying here and we managed with one bathroom, the house was very warm especially the bedrooms,
We ate out on the evenings and visited the local pub The Star,I think everyone needs to visit here it has been in the same hand for 43 years, as well as it being a pub it is also a shop, Ann does a great job keeping it open and sell wonderful local Hepple gin.
