Great place for a day out with the family - take a picnic and be prepared to walk, or just take your picnic and a good book and soak up the scenery.

Derwent Dam is a good day out for the family. Take your bikes or rent them at the Visitor Centre. You can cycle in many directions but the best one is to ride right around the lakes. Not one for the kids or unfit though. Take some bird food.

if you like great mass's of water and nice long walks, you'll love going here. Best experienced when were lucky enough to have a dry sunny spell. Every walk can be unique as you can go off the beaten track exploring in the surrounding woods, or just walk your way slowly round the entire dam in a couple of hours seeing the odd row boat go by, passing the odd cow and just enjoying the clean fresh air of the country

There are a wide variety of walks and cycle routes available around the three reservoirs in the Upper Derwent Valley (Ladybower, Derwent and Howden). We chose the longest of the marked walks that took us up through the woods and across some farmland where we were treated to magnificent views if the valley and Kinder Scout before we dropped down to finish the walk along the banks of Ladybower Reservoir. We also spent some time at Derwent Dam where, due to the recent heavy rain, water was overflowing - a wonderful sensory experience of sight and sound.
The West Tower of the Derwent Dam houses a memorial for the Dambusters, who used the dam to practice before the bombing raids on German dams in WW2.
We parked at the Fairholmes Visitor Centre (£4.70 charge for all day, £2.50 for 2 hours) but, when we go again, we will probably try to park at a lay by approaching the Centre where parking is free. The visitor centre has a small cafe, shop and toilets as well as a cycle hire centre.

Walking is so flexible with a wide variety of options from easy to hard. There are so many interconnecting paths that you can make up a new walk every week. Easy access and parking. Also for those who like it a cafe and cycle hire with good cycle routes and mounting bike routes (not for me) Good access for those with disabilities.
