“Always something to do”
Reviewed 25 November 2013

If there's not a special event taking place in the Old Market Square, just to sit on a sunny day to eat your lunch and watch the world go by on this beautifully paved area with a very modern contemporary water feature (which doubles as a watery playground for children in the school holidays. The whole area is very open and basks in the sunshine. Locals arrange to meet each other at the "left lion" - there are two outside the lovely former council house building.

“This is Nottingham!”
Reviewed 25 November 2013

The lions of Nottingham square guarding the Council House proudly! The statue of our true hero Mr Brian Clough. Nottingham hosts beach parties in the summer, the Nottingham 'Eye' in the Autumn/Winter and water fountains that rise up out of the ground for kids to enjoy too!

Loads of unusual foods, kangaroo burgers ect

“The New Market Square”
Reviewed 25 November 2013

Having lived in Nottingham for many years and having seen the changes made to the market (square funded by the tax payers of Nottingham) I am sorry to say that the "attraction" has become worse with each so called "improvement". It is no longer in keeping with the council house and the other historical buildings in the vicinity.
On the positive side the "beach" which is brought there in the summer attracts a lot of people, and some of them may not have had the opportunity to visit a real beach before.
There is also a market of sorts in there occasionally and this is good when it happens as it was originally build for this purpose and as such keeps up an age old tradition. It's a pity that the market cant be held more often

“A good central meeting place to access many other attractions”
Reviewed 25 November 2013

Its difficult to review a place that I have taken for granted all of my life but thinking about it it is an area that has by big name shopping within easy walking. There are also many pubs, shops cafes and restaurants surrounding the square or very close by. Overlooked by the council house which was built in the 1927 It is also within easy reach of trams and buses to all areas. Beneath the dome of the council house in the shopping arcade is a good place to meet if the weather is a bit inclement otherwise every one meets at the Lion statues in the front. Nottingham castle, the galleries of justice and other attractions are within half a mile. There are often events held in the square, fairs, farmers markets etc. Altogether it is a good place to begin a tour although when there are no events the square looks rather like an understatement, just a large paved area with a water feature at one end which may or may not be switched on. There are worse places to be.
