We went to this hotel last weekend on a special deal with national holidays .When we arrived rooms were not ready so had to wait over one hour .That wasnt a problem we went a walk and had a coffee .When we got to our room we were surprised because it was a large and had a huge bed . The bonus was a wet room because i have difficulty with baths. The downside of the hotel was the lifts. On saturday night neither of the lifts worked we had to be taken up in a dirty service lift .

Room Tip: high floor

This low-budget hotel has some good and some less good aspects. The rooms are clean and the beds comfortable. There is a small bath and toiletries are provided. The room has tea-making facilities and you can pick up a free 'i' version of the Independent newspaper in the morning. The location is central. The downside features are the charmless reception area (although they have tried to jazz it up with soft furnishings lately), the fact that only one lift works so you have to wait for ages and when the lift does come it's full, and, in my experience, the key cards often stop working (this is usually the second night of a stay and I suspect the mistake is in keying in the code, but it's very annoying to get to the room and have to go down to reception in the slow and crowded lift to get it fixed). If you get a good price, then I'd consider staying here, but don't pay too much.

Shabby without the chic. Should have opted for a budget hotel chain which would at least have been clean. Non smoking room but whole corridor smelled of smoke. Dirty, tired and in desperate need of a refurbishment. Receptionist conducted entire check in without looking at us. From the first floor, couldn't even call the list as one of the call buttons missing. Towel rails button missing, the list could go on. Pity as it's in a good location for both castle and Market Square buts that's where the good comments end !

Room Tip: Book another hotel .......

The hotel has made some big improvements since our last stay in March, particularly in the public areas. The bar has new furniture, much more modern and aesthetically pleasing. The same goes for reception which looks much more welcoming and now has a small coffee counter where you can get hot drinks and basic snacks. Unlike our last visit the restaurant was actually open, we had the xmas lunch buffet, which at £6.95 for three courses all you can eat, was excellent value. The food was of a high quality and there was a good selection of dishes. The bar is nice and cosy with a good view of the city, however, opening hours tend to be sporadic.
Room tip - if booking a double room, you can upgrade to an executive double for £10 per night, well worth it as the room is literally double the size and includes a sofa. It is also possible to request a room on a low floor prior to arrival, ideal for us as one of us is terrified of lifts and we travel with dogs.
Rooms were exceptionally clean, the furniture is basic but functional. The housekeeping staff are by far the friendliest at the hotel, always a friendly greeting and offers to help.
The staff are a mixed bag, when we requested more towels they arrived within ten minutes and reception were helpful when booking us a taxi. However, when checking out we encountered someone not so friendly. Every time we have stayed here they have always tried to charge us more money than quoted, so well worth taking a copy of your booking confirmation with you. In this case they tried to add £100 per room. When we produced confirmation the receptionist huffed and puffed, saying 'for gods sake' several times as though the error was our fault. There was a queue of about a dozen people all waiting to check out, a second receptionist appeared but only to do a coffee run for the lady serving at the desk.
The biggest fault with our stay was the lifts, only one working at a time for our whole stay. Then one evening both were broken, I explained to the night porter that we had an elderly dog with arthritis who was going to really struggle to make 8 flights of stairs, he didn't even bother to reply let alone offer to help us. Another guest told us later there is a service lift which could have been offered. Took us almost half an hour to get up to our room.
The hotel is in a great location for the city centre and the Capital FM Arena, we went the first week of December when the Christmas market is on, absolutely delightful and only a 5 minute walk away.
Overall this was a good stay but the staff still let the place down with a lack of knowledge and an abrupt, verging on rude, manner. However, the hotel is clearly making a big effort to improve.

Room Tip: Well worth paying £10 a night to upgrade to a Double Executive room, its double the size of a standard double and has a nice seating area with sofa. You can also request a room on the lower floors by telephoning prior to arrival.
