“Great in every way”
Reviewed 9 June 2014

We visited the hotel, my wife and I, as we were visiting family. We moved down south in 2001 and haven't been up recently. We booked Bestwood Lodge as we stayed here many years ago following a family wedding...which was great then!

The only time we revisited was last March for a meal, however was very disappointed!

When we arrived we were greeted by a very friendly face on reception, we checked in early and were helped with our bags...great service! We got to our room, which was standard but very clean and tidy. Yes, agreed it was very tired, but in a weird way this added to the beauty. It would cost a fortune to update all the bedrooms!!!

We decided to try the restaurant again, and wow...what an improvement. The service, the décor, everything about our meal was perfect. The food was brilliant and the staff were very attentive, very helpful and very knowledgeable about the building. Steven, the manager that night (who was also the receptionist when we checked in) was superb! Definitely a talented young man with a great career ahead. He was so attentive, and you could truly see he cared immensely about the hotel and making improvements...from what we could see he ran a very tight ship...he did his rounds throughout our stay, meeting guests and ensuring staff were doing what they should be...brilliant manager - hold onto him.

The same can be said for the other staff, especially Wendy in Breakfast - she was the most bubbly and excitable person I have ever seen in a hotel - a brilliant wake up call!!! It's clear she loves her job.

Credit goes to the chef - great food, tasty and plenty.

On check out, we were asked all the usual questions 'How was your stay?' etc etc, and answered appropriately. It was the personal touches that were brilliant. Wendy wished us a safe journey home and Steven thanked us for visiting, asked if we needed help with our bags and genuinely we felt like our custom was valued.

Thank you Bestwood Lodge...major improvements since our last visit - and looking forward to staying again and seeing the hotel thrive even more than before. Big thanks to staff. Thanks to Steven for giving us a tour before we left, as we mentioned renewing our vows and looking for a venue for our Christmas do. True sales man...very interested - will pick up a brochure soon...definitely return for Christmas!

100% recommended

Room Tip: Definitely recommended - try the restaurant - ask for a tour - the Chapel is stunning

This place looks great in the photos and is in a beautiful location, but a number of other factors make it poor. I stayed for 5 nights in June 2014 for business.

The hotel is in a park along a long drive from other built-up areas, so it is nice and quiet and leafy. Unfortunately, this means that to get to anywhere for a meal or a drink you really need to drive for a few miles (the local area is residential and lacking in this sort of facility). The wifi is free but hopelessly weak and there is an intermittent phone signal, at least on O2. The restaurant is terrible, one night there were maybe 6 people in the place and the 2 serving staff were completely overwhelmed. The food is pretty mediocre when it does arrive. Breakfast is disorganised and not very inspiring. The room I had (directly above reception, so I'd have expected OK wifi) was cramped and needed redecorating - as did the rest of the hotel. On the last day of my stay the hot water was not working when I got up - I mentioned this to the receptionist when I checked out and he made no comment or apology.

Altogether disappointing. I'll certainly never stay here again or recommend it.

Stayed at this hotel last night as we were attending a birthday party at the hotel. We can say that if we had not been attending this party we would have checked out straight away after seeing our room. The room was dated and shabby but we could accept this if it was clean. It was not, the windows were very dirty. The furniture was dated too and stains and marks on the dressing table. The bathroom was awful and the cold tap in the sink did not work at all. The shower's water pressure was like a dripping tap, pretty pathetic. This hotel is not a budget hotel so expect a lot more than this. I have since read quite a few of the reviews but it appears the management is not doing anything about it. Breakfast this morning... well..... if it was not for the lovely waitress (a little dizzy but good humoured and a great laugh), we would have rather gone to a local cafe. Lets just say that the chef was not checking to see what food was still available in the buffet, and what needed replacing which meant that at one stage there was no bacon, no scrambled eggs or mushrooms. Another item missing was ample serving spoons. On checking out, we raised our concerns with reception and just received shrug and comment that yes they know our room is tired. This is all such a pity as the hotel has so much potential and the grounds are lovely.

Room Tip: I couldn't say

I've just had my wedding reception at Bestwood Lodge and it was simply fantastic. The setting is beautiful. The food was well cooked and was very tasty. The rooms were clean and comfortable. The staff were friendly and helpful. I found it to be very good value for money. Highly recommended.

The road up to this hotel is a bit peculiar (through the housing estate and up the woodland road over some excessively large speed bumps) but the first sight of the front is amazing. A gothic-style building with turrets, carvings and a little chapel on the side in the middle of a woodland.
Inside is full of carved wood, leather sofas, a lovely galleried bar and dining room with views into the gardens and woods through enormous bay windows.
Our room (Queen Mary) had a big comfy bed, telly and usual comforts and a practical and clean bathroom. It was over the main entrance but was not at all noisy. Opening sash windows was a great bonus - fresh air.
Breakfast was great. Lots of help-yourself cereal, juice and toast/pastries. The cooked bit was huge and freshly cooked to order. Endless tea and coffee added to the experience.
Staff were friendly and efficient.
Our mid-week rate was extremely reasonable and, as it is just a stone's throw from the A60 Nottingham to Mansfield road, it's not too far off the beaten track....but feels nicely tucked away.

Room Tip: Queen Mary was a lovely room.

My husband and I stayed at Bestwood weekend 3 May 2014 for my sons wedding. Wonderful hotel in beautiful setting, staff were very attentive who couldn't do enough for you, food was very good. Alright so the hotel does need some TLC but I am sure that they are updating in stages - I think some of the comments regarding the hotel etc are from people who watch Four in a Bed programme. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and just wished we could have stayed a little longer to explore the beautiful grounds. Seriously considering a return visit.
