Absolutely brilliant innovative, exciting food. The tasting menu with matched wines was the best gastronomic experience of our lives by a distance. The room was lovely. The breakfast excellent! I can't think how this could be bettered.

Hi- staff brilliant
Room 7 gorgeous - but own private patio areas had plenty of well established weeds and dirty furniture , so sitting outside in our own private patio was not as expected. Can't have been due to the weather as all other shared gardens were immaculate.

Expensive but that's fine- however we resented reading that there is a £10 charge for ice bucket and glasses in your room- you'd think this would not be an extra cost in room 7 - one of the suites, so most expensive rooms.

Food great but not amazing.

We sat in the conservatory and our opinion of various dishes seemed to be identical to a couple near us and matched comments from other tables too. The chicken muesli was very salty and we could not eat ours- we heard several people politely say it was not to their tastes. But we did not expect to like everything out of ten courses.

Something to cleanse our palate - a fudge based item- made me gag and my body needed to reject it instinctively as it woulda poison. My partner and lady of another couple said the same.

We were delighted to see fresh deep fried crispy squid. But before eating it, a consommé was poured over it, rendering it soggy!! I could not see the logic of that.

We fed our comments back .

It was a shame overall as we spent a lot of money here as we often do on treats, but this did not live up to expectations.

We paid extra for the signature dish - it was divine. However, we thought that really this should have been automatically one of the ten courses. Obviously most people want to try it so it makes business sense to charge extra for it. This led to the general impression that they were out to make as much money out of you as possible by charging ad dons wherever possible which they did.

We don't mind expense, but resent add ons when the price is high enough already. I can understand this from cheap airlines, but it is like flying first class and being asked to pay for your knife and fork!

But staff wonderful, professional and well informed.

Room Tip: Room 7 if they have weeded your private garden/patio!

This was our first trip to Sat Bains despite having lived in Nottinghamshire for several years. We were fortunate enough to be able to have the 10 course meal and accommodation package offer, and it was breathtaking. Every aspect of our stay was superb. We checked in to a suite, which was exquisite - so spacious, yet with the cosy feel of living in a spectacular barn-conversion home of your own. The trip was for a special birthday, we do not usually frequent such top-end establishments, but the staff were so welcoming and attentive it was impossible not to feel relaxed despite the reputation of the restaurant. It was a refreshing departure from the usually snooty staff that are found within lesser hotels with ideas above their stations. I'm not a restaurant reviewer so will not go in to detail about the food - you can find that elsewhere - all I will say is that exceeded any possible expectations we could have had. To inform those of you who have not been and are considering a visit, I will offer the following information.
1. Pay the extra for a suite if you can if it is for a special event. We had room seven. The best we have ever stayed in in the UK.
2. Take the wine match option. We spoke to Sat Bains after the meal in reception and in his own words "It takes it to another level". I don't have the superlatives for the food, but the wine truly did enhance the experience for us by a huge factor. It must also be said that Mr Bains is a very nice chap. His establishment is very important to him and he is genuinely interested in his clientele. He personally made us feel very welcomed and valued which really added to our stay.
3. Get there early and grab a good parking space. We arrived at seven and just squeezed in, although there is plenty of parking on the lane outside. Make the most of the lovely surroundings and the wonderful staff for whom nothing is too much trouble.
4. If you going to go, go for it. Have the extras and go for the best you can. A trip there is a great luxury to a great many of us, so for those fortunate enough to get there, dig deep and try everything. This was not a cheap experience, but it was worth every penny.

We will certainly be back, and next time we will be at the kitchen table. Cannot wait. A big thank you to everyone there.

We visited with very special friends who were treating us to lunch at the Chef's Table as a present for a 'landmark' wedding anniversary. From the moment we walked in we all knew we were in for a fantastic experience. The greeting was warm and friendly - no stand-offishness here - and we felt at home immediately. We opted for the 7 course tasting menu plus the duck egg house speciality (not to be missed) and the cheese course, together with the accompanying wine flight. The chefs were clearly passionate about their food when they presented it and we were delighted that Sat was able to join us at points during our meal to talk about the courses and how they source ingredients. Every course was special but the three stand out ones for me were the chicken 'muesli' - an interesting and unusual combination of ingredients and flavours that worked surprisingly well together, the roe deer which melted in the mouth and, finally, the pear and almond dessert which was refreshing and as light as a feather and made a wonderful end to the meal. The selection of accompanying wines matched the courses splendidly, testament to the excellent skills of the Sommelier. Of course, the price reflects that it is a two Michelin-starred restaurant but in my opinion it is excellent value for money. I have eaten in non-starred restaurants where the cost has been comparable and the food nowhere near this standard. Definitely worth considering if you are looking for a very special treat.

.....credit where credit's due, a friend and I treated our respective wives (both celebrating significant birthdays this year) we visited the restaurant and stayed over - choosing the 10 course tasting menu with wines and accommodation, package.

A word to the wise, don't trust BMW sat nav, mine advised turning off an elevated dual carriageway - obviously not the restaurant's fault, just some advice!

The check in was faultless, as was the chocolate brownie, the rooms nicely furnished and spacious - we were in Room 4 which is in the main building. The meal was fantastic, course after course of excellent food; brilliantly balanced with both one another and the matched wine.

Every member of staff was attentive and couldn't do enough and, impressively, answered every question we had about the dishes served.

One regret, we chose not to have the Duck Egg extra course - 11 courses + all the other bits and pieces seemed a bit greedy so we stuck to the 10. A good excuse to return perhaps!

Lovely breakfast, thoroughly recommend the Chorizo Eggs.

All in all a great experience - congratulations to Sat, not forgetting his Team (he doesn't).

...but just a few niggles.

Stayed here for a special wedding anniversary and will review the dining experience separately so this is purely for the accommodation.

Check in was fine - welcoming and the chocolate brownies are awesome. Shown to a room in an annex but the whole site is immaculate and appealing.

We were in room 1 which was really nice - clean, nice decor and well equipped (including drinks tray).

The first niggle was the size of the WC; if you are over 5'10" then you will have the same problems we had - it is tiny and difficult to get in/out of. Not very romantic to have to leave the door open! :-) I am sure it could be rectified by a change of either the position or fittings.

Second niggle was the lights/electrics went off when we boiled the kettle but also again for no obvious reason. As there is nobody on site after 11pm, this may be a problem but we coped and all seemed fine in the morning.

These niggles wouldn't stop us from staying again for the dining package but would ask for another room.

Remember, read my review of the dining side of things...

So continuing my quest of eating in every two and three star Michelin restaurant took us this time to Sat Bains in Nottingham, and what a great evening we had. Throughout the meal we had the same staff looking after us, which is always nice as you can build up rapport. We had the younger sommelier, who was enthusiastic and passionate without being at all condescending. We went for the 10 course tasting menu with the additional optional course of Sat's dish for "The great British menu" (which you have to have!) and the menu produced a beautiful balanced meal. If I had to criticise at all, a couple of the courses were a little heavy on the salt for my personal taste, but all in all a lovely evening and a coupe, of the dishes made my top 5 of all time! What is really refreshing was that the man himself was cooking and in evidence, something sadly lacking in many Michelin establishments these days. Thanks to Sat and the team for a wonderful evening.
