“lovely hotel”
Reviewed 24 March 2014

We stayed here recently as my husband was at a trade show in the conference centre next door. Rooms were immaculate and really lovely. We were on the ground floor which was handy for going back and forward. Bar staff excellent and were extremely chatty. Our dinner on the Saturday evening was okay but not quite our type of food. I had not realised that breakfast was not included in the price I had paid, and not sure if I would have taken it on the Sunday if I had known this, we did not have it on the Monday morning.

Just a one night stay whilst spending some time in Nottingham, located in nice grounds which seemed to be part of the University, which is not off putting as there is plenty of greenery and the area is very clean. First impressions of the hotel,a modern, contemporary building with plenty of light coming in through the big glass windows. Check in was quick, the receptionist was quite friendly, but never welcomed us to the hotel as such.We had booked one of the executive rooms and the receptionist did ask us if we would like a room with a bath and shower or just a shower. I asked for one with both, when we got to the room we didn’t have a bath, but couldn’t be bothered to move once in the room.I also asked if our room was in a nice location of the hotel re our view etc, the receptionist said yes. We were overlooking the car park!
The room was a decent size and clean. It did feel quite cold though, no carpets on the floor(wooden flooring), very minimal looking furniture (contemporary modern perhaps) and the wallpaper did remind me of that in the log cabins at Centreparcs when we took the kids. There was no cosy, comfortable, luxury feel to the rooms, it was more business like. If you are here for a few days on business using the conference facilities adjacent to the hotel then this is more suited to you.If you are here on a leisure trip and want something a little more comfortable, somewhere to relax in then it’s not for you. Everything was in the room that we needed and the bed was comfortable to sleep in,we just felt the décor was furbished more towards a business type stay rather than leisure.
We decided to have a few drinks in the bar in the evening, the bar was very quiet but that didn’t bother us, the bar is located in the reception area and due to the reception area being so big it did lack a little bit of atmosphere. We sat in the lounge and waited around 10 mins to see if anyone came over to take our order as we weren’t sure if it was table service or not. No one came or even acknowledged us so my partner went over to the bar to order,(which is not a problem as we are aware not all hotels do table service). We ordered a bottle of Prosecco, to which the barman then asked my partner to carry our own flute glasses over to the table whilst he went to fetch the Prosecco!!Surely in a hotel like this the barman brings them over himself on a tray!!No standard hotel etiquette there then? The young barman then proceeded to chat for at least 10 minutes, (possibly more)to his colleague behind the bar. When he did bring the bottle over, no apology for the delay,(remember the bar was very quiet,he wasn’t rushed off his feet),he didn’t even acknowledge us,as in didn’t say a word until he had opened the bottle, poured the first glass and I had said thank you.Disappointing! We ended up taking the bottle up to the room and drinking it in there.
Breakfast food was fine, cooked breakfast, cereal, fruit and yogurts, all the norm so a good choice for everyone. Our tea was served luke warm so we had to ask for a fresh cup,not a problem but we did ask for more milk as the jug had been left on from the previous people who had been sitting there. To our amazement the young girl just took our jug of milk and poured the remains of milk in the jug on the table next to us into ours and put it back on the table. Not being picky, but who’s to say someone’s child who’s bored at the breakfast table hasn’t poured salt, sugar or anything for that matter into the jug, or even had a drink out of it,it never surprises me what other people allow their children to do at breakfast tables. Is this normal procedure in the hotel? The young girl then started laying the table next to us and put fresh milk on there, so I did feel well within my rights to take the milk from the table and use that.
On check out the receptionist struggled to smile at us,no general, pleasant conversation and not at any point did she ask if we had enjoyed our stay,I know generally people don’t like working Sundays but we found this surprising in a customer service industry.

We have to say the service in certain areas did let the hotel down, but overall the hotel is nice, very modern and contemporary. But for us it had more of a cold feel to it,no real character, rather a warm welcoming hotel. We felt it is better placed for the professional who is here on business rather than someone coming for a leisure break stay.

The hotel is near the sports complex inside Nottingham University. A wonderful driveway, tree-lined with fairy lights looks lovely at night. The entrance to the hotel is huge, glass & very nice. The bar area manages to have cosy tables (particularly at night), even though it is located in the main hub of the hotel. The uni campus is large, green & very well kept - a really lovely location. Buses every 10-15 mins to the shopping centre from the main road - a 10 min walk away. A taxi back from the centre after midnight cost £7-50 on the meter (driver wanted to charge a flat fee of £12 but we insisted it was too much so he agreed to use the meter). The standard room was very good - good bed, seating & walk-in shower. We stayed 4 nights in the hotel and also had an Executive room - wooden floor & larger room/bed/TV & 2 bath robes. We found the standard room to be perfectly good. Breakfast over the weekend was very, very good - chunky black pudding, fried & scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns & baked beans. Cooked beautifully & really tasty. Lovely croissants, a fresh fruit salad bowl, yogurts, selection of breads. It wasn't the largest breakfast selection we have had, but the cooked food really was a treat - we all commented on it. The cooked breakfast on the Monday was not quite as good - probably because we were very late & not many people were staying. The staff were good. We didn't eat in the hotel at night. The hotel takes the Tastecard. We would certainly stay here again.

Room Tip: Standard room was perfectly good. Also had an Executive room but we didn't feel it was necessa...

I was fortunate to get this hotel room for £55 which was made even cheaper as Quidco offer cashback on bookings via laterooms as well!!

The website suggested that it was a new and modern conference centre with free parking and it delivered on every level.

The room was spotlessly clean with a 42" LCD TV and the free gym downstairs was modern (although small) and well equipped with 2 treadmills, 2 exercise bikes and 2 cross trainers and a small free weights area.

Definitely worth booking if you can get a deal on the room price!!

We stop in Nottingham regularly as this is our home town so go back to visit family. We shop around for good value and first started using this hotel around Easter 2013. It is very new and clean and in lovely surroundings within the University grounds.
Rooms are clean and bright and have everything needed for a short break.
We have had repeated poor experiences at breakfast and so no longer book breakfast when we stop . Quantity of food available on the buffet is poor and they often run out well before the end of serving time
( Nottingham Belfry manages breakfast much better )
The brasserie for us is a mixed experience With some real ups and downs. This latest occasion food was generally good although not always as warm as we would like. Chips order as extras often don't come out in good time to eat as a side with the meal ordered. The worst experience this time was the sticky toffee pudding which was cold and dry - my first experience of cold sticky toffee pudding.
Staff are friendly and generally helpful. The shame is that they are not that far off being great but they don't seem to pick up on issues and correct them quickly enough .
We will still continue to use the hotel , and will keep our fingers crossed that it develops positively as it becomes more established.

The hotel is well appointed from top to bottom. I only stayed the one night but would definitely make this hotel my base for longer stays. The room was generous in size. The food was of a good quality. The staff were efficient and friendly. Good location if you are visiting Boots HQ. The tram system is being built so be aware of the traffic towards Nottingham centre.

I visit Nottingham frequently on business trips, and this hotel is unquestionably my favourite. The staff are always very friendly and welcoming; the lobby and bar/restaurant areas are spacious and comfortable & the rooms themselves are spot on for their purpose.

I particularly enjoy the large walk-in shower (you're almost always given a choice upon check-in) and the modern feel to the rooms and hotel in general. The hotel is set within University ground so is actually great for a walk/run if such things float your boat.

Not a hotel that would ever be described as cosy, but that suits me just fine and I hope to visit again often in the future.
