“Never again!!!!”
Reviewed 29 August 2011

Poor service, shambles in the dining room at breakfast. Problems with staff understanding my wife wanted poached eggs!! Today they ran out of butter/margarine!!!!! Complained at reception, not bothered. Had a 10% voucher off for the restaurant, never used it. Use The Blue Boar across the road. Good hot food, friendly staff.

I write this review in a bit of a rush however with the feeling that I need to update this review as quickly as possible to stop anyone else using this hotel. I booked this hotel direct over the phone the day before I was due to check in. On the day of check I was unable to attend due to a medical emergency. Upon calling the hotel I was told by a very rude man that they would not consider a cancellation an would charge for the full amount due. In short no compassion, very rude and ruled by the rules.... Thank god we never actually made it there, can only imagine how that bad service would translate when you are face to fce with them!

Difficult to park.Musty/damp smell as you enter. Room was cold and dark (September). Peeling wall paper. Grimey bedlinen and curtains. Mattress was so old everytime my partner turned over I sunk into his dip. Tv I am convinced was from the 70's. Poor picture. No facilities in the room (kettle etc), no shower in the bathroom. I left feeling depressed and the smell was so bad I think Keith Moon is still in there.

My husband and I returned to this hotel after a ten year gap (having really enjoyed it last time) but in ten years it has not moved on. The rooms were shabby, in fact I refused to sleep in the first room we were given as the bed sagged so much it almost reached the floor in the middle - appalling. We did get another room which was ok. However the bathroom had telephone taps where the shower is over the bath - that would have been fine had there been a shower curtain of some sort but as it was you had to kneel down in the bath to get a shower, otherwise the bathroom was flooded - hated it!

Breakfast was the worse aspect of the stay as each morning they ran out of brown bread, orange juice and plates each morning by 8.30am. Breakfast was staffed by eastern European workers whose English was very limited which meant they had difficulty understanding the orders for the cooked breakfast - one guest had 3 attempts before she got the breakfast she wanted. After the first day I didn't bother as the cooked breakfast wasn't that good. In fact usually only one person staffed breakfast so tables weren't cleared and they clearly couldn't cope.

The hotel owner and her family seemd to spend a lot of time in the hotel but made no attempt to deal with anything.

Location is excellent but standards need a serious improvement

Wanting a convenient location to get to Blenheim Palace and Oxford, this hotel came up with availibility for our family, ensuite accomodation, breakfast included and an indoor pool as well! Our room was clean and comfortable and spacious in the central part of the hotel but it had a slightly strange shower arrangement over a free standing bath which meant kneeling to use it! fine for the kids though! By using the fire escape it was a short distance to both car park, restaurant and pool..... this was sadly in need of a lot of tlc (and cleaning!) it has clearly had a fire and when you are in the pool can see at the end, exposed metal parts. It is quite deep which was not ideal for our younger son and quite chilly. The shower/changing area was horrible! It was more the lack of attention to its upkeep that concerned us but this was thankfully not reflected in the rest of the hotel. The staff were polite and friendly, the breakfast buffet served a good range of cold items and then either a hot trolley of bacon, sausage etc or waiter service where you could order hot food. We ate in the bar, the food was hot, fresh but unexciting... the staff not willing to recommend anywhere else but we ate at an ok Indian and Whistlers restaurant, just across the road, which was excellent. As a crash pad it was fine and the town is nice to wander around with a very good Coop,Boots and Sainsburys for any essentials.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the courtyard or pool area to escape any potential road noise.

We recently stopped here for two nights when attending a wedding in a neighbouring village. We would have left after the wedding but for the long drive home late at night. The room we stayed in above the old coach house was possiblly the dingiest most depressing room I have ever seen. Furthermore the walls were paper thin and the furniture old and shabby. The place could be so much better if the owners put as much effort and investment into renovating the rooms as they do with the hanging baskets and potted plants, which make the small terrace bar area quite attractive. We had lunch in the very dark and old fashioned bar and were unimpressed with the choice and quality of the food. Breakfast was surprisingly OK. Accomodation in Chipping Norton is limited and I suspect that complacency has defintitely set in here.
