“Great Room and Location - Worst Breakfast Experience Ever!!”
Reviewed 19 May 2013

My partner and I have just returned from a night's stay at this hotel; we were a little nervous having read the reviews but decided to make our own minds up!

Let me start with the positives (Yes - there are some!)

Great Location - Which is whyI feel this Hotel survives! Lovely restaurant over the road - 'Bitter and Twisted', 'The Crown and Cushion' should take some tips from them!

The Room - Pleasantly suprised (although we did go with low expectations) Very spacious, clean, plugs in the right places etc we had read that the rooms were cold but it seemed fine.

Negatives

The Staff - really don't seem to care and poor English. No manager around either, which doesnt suprise me because I'm guessing he'd have a lot of complaints to deal with!

THE BREAKFAST - BEWARE!! This is the worst breakfast experience I have ever had! Breakfast was served 8am - 10am; we ventured down at 9.30am, the dining area is too small to accomadate everyone at the hotel and we were told they were full so to come back. We came back at 9.50am; sat ourselfs down at a table that had been used and needed cleaning because there werent any clean tables available. We sat there waiting for a waiter to clean our table and explain to us how things worked i.e. did we help ourselfs to breakfast, coffee etc? Minutes later that still hadnt happened so my partner and I started to move the dirty cutlery and dishes and placed them on the other half of our table to make room, having finally noticed this a waiter eventually came over and started to dust the crumbs from our table with his hands onto the floor!! Yes - people started to look in horror!! His sticky hands dusting our table cloth down which seemed to last for minutes; it got worse; he then went on to move some dirty cups on to the table behind us where a gentleman was eating his breakfast, we were all speechless! Eventually, with a partly clean table (although we still had used cutlery on it) we asked this waiter do we help ourselfs to the coffee as well as the breakfast; he seemed shocked 'oh you want coffee? Oh, I'll bring you some then' he brought us cold coffee without any milk (my partner used the small jug of milk that had been left on our table from the previous guests!!) we didnt drink our coffee because it was cold. The breakfast plates are too small, enough for toast but not for an English Breakfast! The Breakfast is greasy and cold and to top things off I had had hair on my plate.

I have never written a bad review in my life but this breakfast experince left me in shock and I just had to share it!

Room Tip: We stayed in room 23 - pleasant enough although very dark.

Good venue. A mixture of traditional and contemporary accommodation. Food was good with friendly staff. WiFi available and the access to a swimming pool was an added bonus for a hotel in the Cotswolds. The stay was topped off with an excellent evening of jazz entertainment which was enjoyed by all.

Called in for lunch after an unfortunate visit elsewhere. Great steak & ale pie and a well kept pint of "Hooky". Good service in a long established hotel in the town centre. Reputed to have the cheapest beer in town.

Sorry - but this has a perfect location in the centre of town, but its cheerful and well serviced bar is a front for an amateur attempt at being a hotel. £145 for A Saturday night and no central heating? Requests for extra bedding and pillows were met by a cushion and a coverlet ( duvet on second traipse to indifferent reception) - poor toiletries and a room who s window was at main road tyre level. Four poster was straight out of b & q complete with view of angle brackets. Room was cursory serviced.
Pool was spartan and breakfast the absolute minimum you could get away with.

All shouted - where is the manager!

What a pity as the beer was excellent.

Room Tip: Mid week much cheaper and priced that more befits the accommodation and absence of service

Rooms are small and dirty. Our so called 4 poster was dirty and pokey. The ensuite was the worst I have ever seen down narrow steps. So called lounge was no more than a storage area. DON'T STAY here if you are expecting a nice Cotswolds inn with any class at all.

This hotel is past it. The receptionist was like the hotel, cold. She didn't have an appreciation of customer service. We got to the room via the corridor which stank of stale cigarette smoke and entered a dark and dreary hotel room which was colder than the bottle of champagne I'd ordered swimming in a bucket of water with no ice which considering we arrived at the time I stated is not a good welcome. To e honest we didn't want to drink the champagne as the room was so dark and cold. Our bathroom had a delightful floral pattern and the bath had no enamel and signs of poor patching up. The floor within the bathroom was stained which was probably due to rotting from underneath due to the fact there is no shower curtain around the bath.
Breakfast, yes, we did stay the night in our grim room, was an equal match to the hotel room. Bland sausage, charred bacon, and a plastic fried egg. As for the pool and leisure facilities as we were so cold it really wasn't an option!!
Suggest the hotel is closed whilst a proper central heating system is installed and ALL the rooms are renovated and staff trained in customer care.

Room Tip: A different hotel

We stayed here recently with family (8 rooms in total) Rooms were OK but they could have been warmer. There was no shower curtain or screen so you could really only have a bath which wouldn't suit everyone. We had two single beds but the duvets only just came to the edge of the bed with no overhang so if you turned over at night you quickly became uncovered.

We ate in the restaurant which I though was overpriced. The strangest thing was that they said we couldn't charge the food to our rooms. There were 16 of us eating and they said they could only produce one bill and we could sort it out between ourselves. As some us had bottles of wine, some were drinking beer etc and some didn't drink at all, some of us were in couples, some were single, some had two courses, some only had one you can imagine sorting the bill out was a nightmare. I just cannot understand why we couldn't charge food and drink to our rooms as we were all residents.

The Sunday lunch was very good and good value for money and was in fact better than the evening meal the night before. The bar prices seemed to be very reasonable and the bar staff were friendly as were the reception staff.

It could be an excellent hotel but it misses the mark. Would I stay here again.... No.
