We got a really cheap deal and I can see why. The room and corridors smelt musty. Our bedroom was dated and there was no shower in the bathroom. However, the service was good and the receptionist was very helpful with several requests that we had.

This is a fairly average hotel. I've often thought that great benefit could be derived by getting a senior member of the management to stay in the rooms. This would enable someone of influence (maybe) to address the many issues, like noisy bathroom fans, television with poor reception, loos that do not flush properly. Also they may observe the mismatched furniture, curtains that don't close properly etc. We had a nice big room which would win no design awards.
Most staff appeared to be eastern europeans and the language difficulties were overcome by pointing in the direction of the toaster, rather than bringing some toast, for instance.
We did find a helpful waitress in the bar who insisted on bringing our drinks over, that aside there is not much to recommend or overly dislike.

we stayed for one night on our travels, visting from australia. The crown and cushion was a pleasant suprise, clean, freindly staff, excellent food and fantastic courtyard garden, would recondmend to others any time

Room Tip: away from the courtyard and bar at the back would be the quietest

This place is full of Character and History and good be very good but there does not appear to be any Management presenceand service suffers as a result. One main difficulty is communication with staff who in the main have a low command of the English Language.
Rooms themselves are O K but I found bathrooms poor . Wash basin was miniscule and lowly positioned and had no adjacent shelf to house one's toiletries. The only shelf in the bathroom was on the wall opposite the wash basin . My room was on the ground floor of the annexe and the fire instructions were for the first floor - how long the wrong instructions had been there God knows.
Waiter in restaurant told us there was no Childrens menu but did not tell us there was an alternative bar menu which was better for youngsters -or that they would serve this in the Restaurant if we wished. It was only when we asked for half portion meals off the restaurant menu , that this info was imparted.
Wine waiter in the restaurant had extreme difficulty opening a bottle of wine - he did not seem to be acquainted with the mechanical operation of the corkscrew and had to take the wine bottle away to seek help elsewhere. ! !
We stayed three days during which time there was no evidence of Senior Management presence.
I can not see if they don't improve quickly how the missing Management can avoid finishing up without missing guests

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms which are in fact in an annexe at the rear of the building are quiet and peaceful but you have to traverse the car park to get to them

When I arrived it took 30 mins to check in I was told I hab been contacted re change of room Not true! Doors were locked between the rooms and the residents bar which meant we had to walk all round the building. The fire fire alarm when off every night all for false alarms when the staff were aproached about this and other safety issues the stock answer was "Yes its always doing that" This did make me feel somewhat unsafe also alot of the fire doors were on yale locks and opened towards you, on opening the fire adj room 20 you were immediately greeted with a set of steep steps which would been a problem if you were rushing to get out.The car park was way to small and full of cars belonging to people not staying in the hotel. most of the staff were not very well mannered eg I asked to be service in the bar and the receptionist told me "you will have to wait I am on the phone" I will not be back. you could make a TV proggramme about this place or has it been done already Mr Cleese...
