“Clean and comfortable... But cold!”
Reviewed 28 January 2014 via mobile

I spent one night at the Crown and Cushion whilst away on business. I had room 22 (Blackwell) - a suite with 4-poster bed and cast iron bath. The room and bathroom were both clean although, as numerous other reviews have mentioned, the room was really cold. The electric heater did little to improve things so I was pleased to have spare bath towels which I could use as blankets! Room service was delivered quickly (and they were quite happy for me to charge it to my room despite having paid for the accommodation on arrival) and the staff were friendly and welcoming. I had to ask for the wifi details but the connection was good. I would be happy to stay there again - but would pack another jumper!

Arrive, and promptly fall over on slippery path from car park. See warning sign as I pick myself up. Not a good start.
Check in, have to pay in advance, no option to charge items to room. Alarm bells start ringing.
Find way carefully to our superior room (no.36) back up by the car park, confident in the knowledge that the extra £10 on this room would be well spent.
Walk in, cold, no heating, curtains flapping in breeze. Keep coats on and ring reception (remember this is January).
Reception tell us that heating comes on at 5.30pm (they think), and we should use the potable radiator. Not good enough.
Insist on more heat, receptionist arrives at door 5 minutes later with an extra fan heater.
Insist on yet more heat, receptionist rings us 5 minutes later to say he’s found the timer and put the heating on.
Quick word about the room – four poster bed has broken strut, décor very tired, separate room masquerading as a suite embarrassingly small with one couch and a TV. Very uninviting.
Go out for an hour to warm up. Come back, heating not on.
Walk to reception – accompanied by neighbours on same quest – and insist on another room. Standard room available in main hotel, bite their arm off.
Find room 1, not too bad. More cosy, use tea bags to secure the rattling window, happy with the result.
Go out for evening, eat in bar first and have an ok fish and chips, come back, go to bed pretty happy.
Wake up 20 minutes later to sound of dog barking in next door room!
Sleep ok, wake at regular intervals by the dog and a bit of noise being by the main entrance.
Morning – wake up, pull light switch to bathroom no light! Same with bedside light.
Go to breakfast – not bad. Good range and happiness returns with full stomach.
Checkout – ask for our £10 back for not being able to stay in superior room. Receptionist can’t authorise this. Manager isn’t around. He’s at another hotel. Can’t ring him. She’s not allowed to give out his mobile. Assume I can’t name him in this review…
Receptionist proceeds to say that she has already spoken with Mr X, and he has promised to ring us today and will refund the £10. We go away not 100% confident that we will get the call.

48 hours on, no call, no refund. Not overly surprised.

Room Tip: Make sure heating works. Standard room in main hotel (no.1) much better than "superior" o...

Stayed 2 nights in room 27 (family room for 2 adults and 2 big teenage boys) in early/mid January. Our room was clean and ready when we arrived, with an extra single bed and a double sofa bed in addition to a 4-post double bed. The total cost was 185 GBP for 2 nights (Saturday & Sunday nights) including a delicious, cooked-to-order, full English breakfast for all four of us on both days. Easily booked through www.booking.com - the best hotel booking web site. The bathroom shower was excellent with a strong water flow and good hot temperature. The room was nicely decorated in a style consistent with the history of the property and seemed freshly painted. The room was very quiet since it is quite some distance from the front desk and main road. The plasma TV and heaters worked perfectly and parking (provided for no extra charge) was readily available and easily accessed FROM THE BACK STREET (take note - look for the hotel sign in the back street). The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The indoor pool is heated and looks very inviting. The gym is well equipped (treadmill, weights, various machines) and the squash court is a great bonus (but please bring white soled shoes). The hotel's pub looks amazing (authentic, warm, inviting, character filled) however we ate at the nearby Thai/Malaysian/Chinese restaurant ("Thai Shire") which has the best duck pancakes on the planet and scores #1 on Trip Advisor. We enjoyed our stay and therefore highly recommend the Crown & Cushion. However don't come expecting a 5 star hotel - this is a character filled 15th Century coaching inn with an amazing history (eg, once owned and used as a lavish party venue by The Who drummer, Keith Moon, and thought to be the location of a clandestine meeting in 1604 between Guy Fawkes and Robert Catesby who together planned the Gunpowder Plot to blow up James 1 and the Houses of Parliament). It's probably 3.5 star but without doubt it's the best 3.5 star hotel we've ever stayed in. Come and enjoy the Cotswolds at the Crown & Cushion!! I award it 5 stars for great value and lifelong memories of a wonderful hotel and town.

We had a great stay here during the christmas break and we enjoyed our stay here very much. The room we had was very spacious, with a separate small dressing room. Plenty of space in our room.

One downside for the room was it’s a bit cold when we first entered our room. The heater seems to be off but it worked fine after we attended to the reception. The hotel has a swimming pool as well but we did not use the facility.

We had our dinner at the hotel pub and we enjoyed our food. Very nice and classic english-styled pub with great food at reasonable price. The waiter was very friendly as well, making us felt so welcomed to dine here. The english breakfast was good and we had a great time relaxing and enjoying our breakfast here.

Great place to stay while visiting Cotswold and definitely worth the money spent.

Have visited this hotel before and am always impressed by the reasonable prices of accommodations and in the bar. Whilst some people say the hotel only employes foreign staff to save on costs we have always found their attitude is excellent and they are always so helpful.

Room Tip: I would always prefer to stay in the main building

Our party of eight people loved this hotel. We thought the four rooms we were given were lovely.
We were given a very warm welcome by friendly and helpful staff. The dining room was lovely
and breakfast was varied and delicious. The hotel provided gluten free cereals which was a nice surprise for me. There was a delightful lounge with log fire and lots of board games. The bar was full so we were able to order bar food and eat it in the dining room. The food was delicious and portions large. The waiters were very helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We would certainly go back there and would recommend it to all our friends. Ruth B.

For the second year running we celebrated my husbands birthday and New years eve at the Crown and Cushion. Once again we had a great time and much needed break.
A great welcome from the proprietors, nice room, nice meals and a fantastic new years eve celebration with a buffet second to none! Also enjoyed a leisurely swim in the pool. Will definitely be booking again for next year

Room Tip: It all depends if you want to be in the midst of things in the hotel which we were last year but thi...
