“Room for improvement”
Reviewed 4 July 2014

The good stuff: warm welcome, lovely old building, swimming pool, clean room, well stocked bar, super location.

The not so good: the wifi in our room did not work and the decor was a bit tired. The four poster bed looked like it had seen better days too. There wasn't enough loo roll and no one answering the phone at reception when we called to request more. Smoke from people outside the bar was blown inside. There was not much for vegetarians/vegans on the evening menu and given the scale of the operation I was surprised that although gluten-free options were available at breakfast (buffet) there wasn't any provision for lactose intolerance diets. Finally, check out took a long time (only one person on reception and three couples needing to check out at the same time.)

Overall, while there was much to like, I'd expected more attention to detail and felt that the quality which this place seems to aspire to wasn't obvious on this visit.

.....the Room 14 was directly above the passage between the Bar and Restaurant and the smell of those smokers in this passage way, both when passing through and in our bedroom just detracted from a wonderful stay. The Polish staff were very friendly and obliging. The breakfasts were plentiful and varied in choice from cereals to full cooked English and Continental meat/cheese. The one evening meal we had was delicious - Rack of Lamb..yum. My wife who is a coeliac was looked after well by Chef in ensuring everything was gluten free. So overall, nice place, good well dressed staff who were accommodating in all requests, quaint with albeit narrow corridors and stairways.

Room Tip: Ask for one not above the passage way between bar and restaurant.

We picked this hotel for a 2 night stop over on our way home. Attracted by a four poster bed we booked with the proviso that the room is easily accessible as we are both disabled and also have to carry a lot of luggage and equipment. The room, No.39, was situated at the top of the very tight car park and we were able to park very close to the door. The room looked lovely at first glance but we soon started to find faults which although small added together to make it disappointing after reading the reviews of others. The TV had very poor reception (and it was the World Cup!), a poor repair had been tried which made no difference. The bathroom looked very nice but a poorly adapted blind and a bath plug that was detached soon became obvious. We were looking forward to dinner in the highly rated dining room but unfortunately the modifications to the path from the car park rooms to the hotel rear entrance made it a painful walk for my wife who has a very nasty foot injury, this meant we had to use our car to drive to the front entrance and hope a space was available, which meant slightly easier walk to the dining room. We do understand this is probably a unique situation. Fortunately the reputation of the food is well deserved as was the breakfasts. Would we stay there again? No, but that is mainly because of the unique problems we have, wheelchair users would face a downhill/uphill trip to the main hotel using many ramps.
It is a lovely hotel, with very friendly staff which is struggling to adapt to modern requirements of the visitors. Attention to detail is needed by housekeeping and repairs. Using the car park tests the drivers parking abilities especially if you have a large car.

Room Tip: Room numbers 21- are in the car park so away from the hotel bustle. Rooms in the main hotel are in n...

The hotel is ok! cleanliness is fine, but staff attitude is very poor! It's a shame because the place has potential, it's just poorly run with a don't care attitude. We waited about twenty minutes at reception before any one acknowledged us and then we were treated as if we were disturbing them, this continued later with the bar staff who really didn't care!! very poor service.
On the positive, the location is good, the hotel has character and history and the facilities are ok!

What can I say? An old English hotel with surprisingly large rooms. The furniture is quite old and the bathroom isn't according to contemporary standard.

But the major drawbacks are:
1. Access to most of the rooms is difficult due to extremely narrow corridors and stairs, especially if you have to carry large luggage.
2. The breakfast is awful: dirty plates and nearly nothing on offer at 9 o'clock, thus a single toast was all.

All this isn't acceptable regarding the pricing (75 GBP)

The hotel is proud that it was owned once by Keith Moon - it's a shame that there appears to have been no investment since his days.
Night one was very hot. Couldn't open windows as they open on to the street and are at ground floor. Can't fault the double glazing which kept the noise out......but at £110pn in middle england, I'd expect air conditioning.
Then again, I'd expect my shower to be more than a "hairspray" fastened to the bathroom wall on some wobbly appendage. Showering was - shall we say, "interesting"...once I'd worked out the best angle to bounce the water off of the wall onto myself.
You might think that is what to expect if you stay in a historic coaching hotel.....but we were in the modern coach house addendum. Goodness knows what rooms in the old part must be like!
This hotel is in a fantastic location, it has friendly staff - and I have to say the breakfasts were superb. But it is crying out for investment in updated sanitary facilities. I would not stop there again myself, in its current condition....not at any price.

Room Tip: Overall I'd sadly say "choose another hotel" as an earlier reviewer said.

Old, quaint and quirky but what a find. the staff and there are lots of them are friendly helpful and get thing done, nothing seems too much trouble. The food is excellent 1st night in the restaurant 2nd night in the bar both the same high standard, quality and service, excellent prices with a really good wine selection again reasonable priced. The rooms as the hotel require a decoration but this does not retract from the overall ambience of the hotel as it seems to add to the character and it is very clean. Did not have time to use the leisure facilities but they are there and available to all for use, what an asset in a hotel of this grading. the hotel is in an excellent situation with so much to do in the locality. I hope I am able to revisit this hotel in the near future just to enjoy it. As stated the staff are great but the young man on reception is worth a special mention just for his presence and calm ability to organise and get things done. A great big thank you to the hotel overall for an excellent two days it really helped our little group have a great time.

Room Tip: have a room overlooking the courtyard, the rooms on the front I imagine would be noisy with the traf...
