The Red Lion Hotel
Reviewed 22 December 2011

This hotel has a very high opinion of itself which, unfortunately, I do not share. We stayed for two nights in a superior room which had an enormous bed, sadly the bedding wasn't large enough for the mattress with the result that sheets and duvet just moved around at will. Breakfast was of lowly quality consisting of pre packaged cereal portions, curly edged cold meat and sweaty cheese. Dinner was, however, of a much worse variety! We wondered why we were the only diners and now we know - a 1960's menu presented to service station standards sums it up.
We were well treated when we complained, given free wine, a bottle of champagne, a free stay next year, but I doubt that we will take up the offer simply because it is so much better to stay in one of the many local B&Bs and eat in a good restaurant in town.
Our advice is to book B&B only and eat elsewhere as the hotel, despite its claims, does not offer fine dining (or even dining).
We visit Henley regularly to see our daughter and grandchildren, will we stay here again? No, unless they can prove that they have improved beyong recognition.

Room Tip: Ask for a room where the bed linen is the same size as the mattress

We stayed in the Red Lion for one night whilst dining at the Green Olive in Henley, which is our third visit to this restaurant and its very good. Our room rate was £99 which was a special offer with half bottle of champagne and stawberries, breakfast and upgrade to a superior room. We were given a room at the front of the hotel overlooking the river and this was the best feature of the room. We did expect the room to have character and period furniture/features however the room we were allocated just looked tired and in need of a refurb - Nothing like the double rooms shown on their website!!

The most outstanding part of our stay was breakfast - included in the rate - and the waiting staff really did create the illusion that we were starring in an episode of Fawlty Towers. There were too many waiting staff and none of them knew what the others were doing, or their customers! So as we put toast down it was cleared away and a couple at a table next to us had their breakfast taken away shortly after they had just selected it from the buffet! Comical!!

In our opinion the Red Lion trades on its position in Henley to justify, and get away with, the room cost, as it is not based on the quality of the rooms themselves.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that looks like one on their website!!

The Red Lion Hotel in situated in the very heart on Henley, a stunning location, and right on top of the shops and restaurants. Not that you need to eat out because the food at the hotel is AMAZING, and of a very high standard. The hotel is packed full character & charm, with large clean bedrooms, something that is becoming unusual these days! I booked the hotel to host a conference, and I have to say, the facilities are brilliant and would suit any type of meeting. Really, the best thing about the hotel is quite simply the staff, always smiling and would literally bend over backwards to ensure that your stay is enjoyable. If you are thinking of staying in Henley, or hosting a meeting in the area, you MUST book this hotel..!

One of my favourite hotels. I have stayed here 5/6 times now.You can generally get a very good (upgraded?) room for the price. Staff are friendly/efficient. Rooms are large and clean - exceptional for the price. Close to river/town centre. Breakfast is expensive though - I go into town for a better deal.

My only complaint was they charged my credit card for the room on the day I booked (a week before arrival). Somewhat naughty, especially as I was not told this would happen when I made the booking. I also suspect that unless you are pushy you could be fobbed off with an inferior room. They now understand that I pay at the end of my visit or not at all.

Room Tip: Ask for an upgrade/large room - you may get one without having to pay a penny more. The rooms overl...

We arrived on the evening of the 3rd Dec to be told of a boiler breakdown and so no hot water or heating. We were obviously concerned about this but were assured that there would be some form of compensation. The front desk staff personally showed us to our lovely large room which overlooked the Thames. The room was admittedly a little chilly but we were supplied with a little oil radiator and 2 fan heaters which warmed the room perfectly. We were on a DBB basis and I can't fault the food. Unfortunately there were a number of large parties in for dinner and so we did have to wait longer than I would have expected for our food but the attentive servide we received from the staff more than made up from it. We were also approached by the general manager who was very apologetic about the problems. We were offered the opportunity to move to another hotel, have a 50% refund or a future nights free stay. We chose the latter as the Red Lion is definately somewhere we will return to. The only slight disappointment for me personally was the lack of vegetarian options at breakfast. I was limited to fried egg (would have preferrred scrambled), tomatoes and Mushrooms. All in all the hotel was lovely and the attentiveness of the staff more than made up for the boiler problems.

Room Tip: Room 209 was big and looked right onto the Thames. It could be either a king or twin room

We booked this hotel as we were attending a cake decorating course at Confetti and Spice and chose it after reading the great reviews on tripadvisor. Imagine our concern when reading the disgruntled review below the night before travelling!!

Upon arriving at the Red Lion we were told immediately about the heating and hot water issues and offered the chance to cancel our booking. We were shown to our large room (209) with views onto the Thames and staff gave us 3 room heaters which took the chill off perfectly. Following a delicious meal with attentive service, despite two large Christmas parties being fed at the same time, we were offered the chance of being moved to another hotel at no expense, a 50% refund or a free return trip. We were so impressed with the staff, service and accommodation (despite the problems) we decided upon the return trip and can't wait to experience the Red Lion at its best!

Wonderful, relaxing time in the Red Lion at Henley. We found the staff were efficient, helpful and friendly. We had booked our room months before, for three nights, and were delighted with our spacious room and bathroom (208) and the view over the river. The beds were very comfortable and spacious. There is a lot of history associated with this hotel and it has many interesting historical features and items. It is centrally located, very close to the river and the main street including the bridge over the river. Breakfast was good and the staff were courteous and obliging.
We would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Our room on the 2nd floor was great, and double glazing kept out any traffic noise from the road bet...
