“Nice but noisy”
Reviewed 17 August 2014

Nice old coaching inn in great picturesque Oxfordshire town is not much more than nice. It's in a great location but the rooms struggle with a lack of light, lack of electrical sockets and the bathroom needs a really good clean (our shower curtain was mouldy as was the grout between the tiles). The hotel itself has plenty of character and loads of parking but is in such a good location that the road outside contributes far too much to the in room ambiance with the windows and the secondary glazing shut. This means the rooms itself heats to an unacceptable level which means you have to choose from excessive noise or excessive heat. Of course this could be due to us staying in August but I suspect the noise is not month specific.

That's said a more than functional spot to spend a night in a lovely old English town just try not to get a room that fronts onto Hart Street.

Room Tip: As I said before try not to get a room that fronts onto Hart Street.

If you're booking this hotel and are a light sleeper, reject out of hand any room that's at the front of the place. Without modern and effective double glazing, we had to endure early-hours revellers, traffic, church bells, delivery vans and, early the next morning, refuse disposal lorries. Didn't sleep a wink. To the hotel's credit, a complaint at the front desk produced a refund of around £60. This is clearly an ancient building and our room was quaintly old-fashioned with a comfortable bed, although is there any excuse at £145 a night (special rate), for a mouldy shower curtain and a shabby, fraying blind? Likewise, the carpet up the stairs to the guest rooms is a stained, threadbare disgrace. The service is functional rather than friendly, the breakfast adequate rather than amazing. This hotel has a location to die for, and things could be so much better.

This hotel looks great from the street and reception but the rooms are very poor. Having booked over six months in advance we we hoping for something special but were allocated a tiny closet loft conversion. On entering the room we were very supprised to see a bath in the middle of the very small room space. The room was too small to walk around the bed and you could not even open the closet doors as the side table blocked the doors. We were unable to unpack and left the next day. Out side the windows were a ladder against the wall and piles of builing rubbish. I reported these things to the reception on checkout and they made excuses rather than saying they would resolve the issues for the next guests. Very disappointing as this is also an expensive hotel. See the attached pictures.

Stayed at this hotel for one night earlier this month. Room was tiny in the so called boathouse but it wasn't a boathouse at all it was more like a cupboard! We parked our car in the appropriate parking place only to find the next day when we wanted to leave a car was blocking us in. We asked 3 times for the car to be moved in the end my husband was given the keys to move someone else's car!!! I moved our car to allow him to park the other car & on getting out of my car I slipped on the gravel which was so thin there was hardly anything on the ground. I completely slipped down onto the ground grazing my back on the runner of the car. I went to reception where I spoke to the manager who never once said are you ok, I'm sorry this has happened etc. I filled out a health & safety form & asked what happened now & was told nothing!!! The only thing that is good about this hotel is the wonderful masseuse, she was brilliant. Will not be going back to this hotel again will stay at the hotel du Vin instead!

Room Tip: Stay in the main hotel

There surely can't be worse accommodation in Henley for the price!!!!
This hotel has great character - from the outside - and is in a super location but don’t stay here.
We paid £155 plus £10 for parking per night and stayed two nights.
We changed rooms twice - both located in the main building - they were small and dirty and much was tired or in a poor state e.g. cracked wash basin with thick resin attempting to cover the nasty cracks…
Finally, we moved to a room located in the courtyard (car park). These rooms are contemporary, have good bathrooms and are somewhat sheltered from the noises of the restaurant, bar or (in our case) wedding party.
All that said, the receptionist was extremely helpful and the rest of the staff were attentive.

Room Tip: if you have to stay here then chose a courtyard room

We stayed here for five nights. The history and location were unbeatable, but the condition of the hotel did not match the price. Peeling paint, ratty carpet and frayed furniture should not be allowed to be unattended to. The rooms are nicely decorated, just old. Some staff was extremely helpful, but others were not. The included breakfast was a plus. It was very good, and the wait staff was very attentive. While it is probably not their fault, the wifi was cumbersome. You have to have a new sign-in every time you use it. The rooms were of good size.
