“very torn about this place”
Reviewed 6 May 2012

The shortcomings of this place were really all about purpose. If I was looking for somewhere for a short tourist break in the area it would be first rate. As a base for a business trip it was poor. Firstly, in general the staff were helpful and friendly, good start. Now the first failing as a base for business, breakfast was served from 7.30 weekdays, 8.00 weekends. We had 8.00 meetings booked just outside Henley. No problem said our helpful staff, a note would be left for the morning shift with our breakfast order and it would be ready at 7.30. Well, that was the theory. Next day there was no way the chef was going to start cooking until 7.30, so an excellent breakfast ended up rather rushed. The next day being Saturday meant a real challenge in the morning. We mentioned this to someone, who turned out to be the manager, and the problem was solved. After (again, rather excellent) dinner a packed breakfast was produced, smoked salmon, fruit, bread, cheese, brilliant but why couldn't that have been offered before?

Another problem for a business user was the internet access. No signal at all in the room, and very patchy downstairs. On checking out I mentioned this and was told that in my room the wifi rarely ever reaches! Oh dear.

The room itself was good, apart from the rather odd en-suite arrangement. "Open plan" I think is the best description! I may be old fashioned, but I like a bit of privacy in the bathroom department, even from my nearest & dearest!

On the whole this is a very nice place for a pleasure trip (bathroom aside). It is central, surrounded by many good places to eat and drink. I like the concept of a small hotel attached to a restaurant, have a good meal, few drinks then totter up the stairs to bed. Great. However if you are staying for work, I'm afraid it has some serious shortcomings.

Very large room and en suite bathroom (room 2?). Breakfast in the morning was substantial. Makes a great base to go off and explore Henley from. Good location.

very enjoyable 1 night stay, at good rate inc. breakfast, on a Sunday night. Room was very spacious and comfortable and breakfast was good, albeit that the restaurant was quite chilly, despite radiator turned on high. Very helpful and friendly staff, and received a prompt, helpful reply from manager, when I emailed her my concerns about room allocation. Would stay here again if we could have same room and similar rate

Room Tip: room on higher floor

Despite concerns about recent bad press for Loch Fyne, I went ahead with 60th birthday treat for my husband. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. Food was very good and service was fine. Shame the full menu was not available because (we were told) supplies were low as it had been Mother's day the previous day - as there is a Waitrose at the back of the hotel supplies could be sought there? However the stay was good on the whole and maintenance was taking place as we left, which should be encouraging.

Room Tip: yes, it's a bit noisy but central position is what we wanted

Well according to other travellers room 1 should be renumbered 13... i half agree.. it is noisey however there was nobody outside in the restaurant courtyard so we had no issue with that potential noise. However you can overhear the "unmanned reception" early in the morning (8ish, well i am on holiday!). So to conclude it is very good value, breakfast is brilliant with a good selection, staff very polite and helpful, room was clean and given fresh water everyday which was a nice touch. I would recommend.

Room Tip: If given Room1 ask to move, but if like us the hotel is fully booked then hey it works... just dont...

Lovely welcome and easy check in. Car park a little tight but it is free. Booked a table in the restaurant and the food was very good. Asked reception to book a taxi and found that nothing was too much trouble. Later in the evening, the guy from reception was working behind the bar and was very pleasant. Our food at breakfast was very good although the service was slow and some other guests complained about their food.

Really very dissapointed. The staff were very rude, they didnt care that we were there from the receptionist to the bar staff. I sent an email of complaint and they offered me a free nights stay and a bottle of wine, whihc was good.

Went to book this free stay and the lady advised me that i would need to pay, sent a mail back explaining that I had a free night and never got a reply.

So all in all I would not go there as they belive you are doing them a favour by staying. The location is very central and good for walking about around the town.
