“Decent for the experience”

So, this is really more of a book-lovers must-go type place, for the experience.

Service is something most people complain about, but it is a self-service establishment. You find your own table, your choose your food and drinks, and you head up to the bar to place your order. It is a small bar counter, with one, maximum two servers, who do both jobs of taking the order, and make the order (cocktails, Pimms etc), so do expect to wait. They will serve you, so do take note of your table number. Basically, everything is really chill and slow, for slow eveings.

I do recommend going early though, because it is quite the popular hangout. Went with my mum and the only table left was a strip of wood nailed to the wall with two bar stools. Slightly uncomfortable, since it was also the walkway, but there ya go -- experience.

Food-wise, it was decent. We ordered the fish & chips and the bangers & mash. The bangers and mash were good. I liked the onion gravy a lot. And proper sausages too. Mash was very buttery and creamy. The fish and chips were fine. Good chips, though the fish wasn't very fresh, which was a pity, because it was coated in a lovely batter.

Choice of cask ales were good. My mum loves her ales, despite the summer heat, and we enjoyed them tremendously.

“Literally just grab a picture outside maybe one inside and leave”

The food is not good, the prices are not good, if you just go to take some quick photos it is worth the visit. I even walked to Tolkien's old house afterwards (not worth it).

“Terrible”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 July 2014

If ever there was a case of a place living off it's reputation, this is it. Saw that this place was famous for literary giants back in the day...in a nutshell....no service, table was filthy and no one came to wipe it off, tried to order food but found out they were out of a lot of things on the menu...how can you be a pub that has no fish and chips at 7pm? Really? We left.
Don't waste your time or money...just take a picture from the outside.
