So, this is really more of a book-lovers must-go type place, for the experience.
Service is something most people complain about, but it is a self-service establishment. You find your own table, your choose your food and drinks, and you head up to the bar to place your order. It is a small bar counter, with one, maximum two servers, who do both jobs of taking the order, and make the order (cocktails, Pimms etc), so do expect to wait. They will serve you, so do take note of your table number. Basically, everything is really chill and slow, for slow eveings.
I do recommend going early though, because it is quite the popular hangout. Went with my mum and the only table left was a strip of wood nailed to the wall with two bar stools. Slightly uncomfortable, since it was also the walkway, but there ya go -- experience.
Food-wise, it was decent. We ordered the fish & chips and the bangers & mash. The bangers and mash were good. I liked the onion gravy a lot. And proper sausages too. Mash was very buttery and creamy. The fish and chips were fine. Good chips, though the fish wasn't very fresh, which was a pity, because it was coated in a lovely batter.
Choice of cask ales were good. My mum loves her ales, despite the summer heat, and we enjoyed them tremendously.
