“Always Great Food!!!”
Reviewed 20 July 2014 via mobile

Having eaten here on many past occasions, the food once again today hits the spot!

Whatever dishes you choose you get really tasty home cooked Malaysian delights. I'd highly recommend, don't be put off by the simple basic furnishings, the food is worth the visit!

“Brilliant but not always consistent”
Reviewed 19 July 2014

I have eaten at Makan La many times, and usually have the same main course dish (Nasi Goreng). This has been unbelievably great on occasions, and sometimes merely quite good. We went on Thursday night - too lazy to cook after a few days in Madrid, and the meal was so good that it was the highlight of the culinary week, and so outstanding that I just had to rave about it publicly.

Starving after having had little food since breakfast (a small croissant at Madrid Airport at 0800) we arrived to be greeted by the sight of a HUGE party table, and the news (delivered by a grumpy and over-stressed young Chinese waiter) that we'd have to wait at least three quarters of an hour.

It was well worth the wait.

Greedily we had spring rolls and Har Kau to start (the Har Kau was sublime) after which I had the Nasi Goreng (which was just like my Mum used to make - she was a great cook after living in Singapore) with two pieces of Satay Chicken, one of which I donated to my dining companion! Vicki had Mee Hoon Goreng Pedas (thin rice noodles with prawn and chicken), which she really enjoyed. I had a taste and thought it really deliciously tasty.

Our waiter cheered up once the big table was done with, and was polite, helpful, and friendly. The Malay chef did a great job, and it was nice to actually meet him to thank him in person.

When they're firing on all cylinders, Makan La is extraordinarily good, and a real Oxford highlight.

All they need now is to keep the Tiger beer colder!

“Delicious food at a great price”
Reviewed 8 July 2014

We stumbled across this little gem a couple of years ago and we're delighted to find it still up and running. Delicious food, served fresh and all at a very reasonable price. Lovely big portions too. The mixed starter was fantastic. Sadly a billboard advertising another cafe/bar upstairs was almost blocking the entrance to this place and distracting business away. We spoke to the waitress about moving the sign or putting up one of their own to try and encourage more custom as we were disappointed to find it very quiet, on an otherwise busy Saturday night in town (although it did mean we got a table)!! This is a must for anyone wanting a delicious meal out at a good price. We will definitely be back!!

“great asian cuisine with a twist”
Reviewed 29 June 2014

We found this place down a back street in Oxford on a day out

Tiny front window on a narrow building.

Great food, and a really good price on a Saturday lunchtime.

“Fantastic Malaysian food”
Reviewed 27 June 2014

I have visited this restaurant twice in the past two years. Both times the food was delightful! The portions are large (easily shared by two people) and flavorful. Service was quick and pleasant. The restaurant is tucked away on a side street off of the High Street, but well worth finding. I had the laksa noodle soup, which was quite spicy but delicious. Definitely recommend, especially at the end of a cold day.
