“Beautiful Old Building”
Reviewed 4 December 2011

My husband booked a room at The Old Parsonage as a surprise for my birthday. We had walked past it on a previous visit to Oxford and i had commented on the beautiful exterior. It is a wonderful building and the interior is also lovely.

The room had a lovely little terrace overlooking the main courtyard. The bed was so comfortable and we had a great nights sleep. The bathroom is well stocked, the tea tray a little sparse but did have fresh milk. Dressing gowns were a nice extra addition. The room was adequate in size. Breakfast was lovely, we had a continental breakfast in our room for 12.95 each.

There is parking but it is very limited and we saw someone having trouble getting out. We got a taxi all the way there and i'm glad we did. The location of the hotel is great. We did hear the nearby the church bells on Sunday but it was actually quite nice to hear and they didn't start till about 9.45am.

The staff that we came into contact with were friendly, the restaurant staff were very busy when we walked through to get to our room.

Room Tip: The terrace on rooms 8, 9 10 are lovely.

Stayed Fri-Sun 25th/27th November in a superior room. Nice touches like slippers, dressing gown, good tea and coffee, breakfast table very high quality and varied, cooked breakfast good but why the small sausages(?). Evening meal very good quality. Hotel is very well set out and very near the city but far enough out to be quiet. Cost is high but you cam be certain of a comfortable stay. Went to Gees resturant just few hundred meters up the road, found it just as on website - expensive but surroundings and quality of food worth it. Had Sunday lunch at The Parsonage for two @£23 for two courses + drinks + service charge = £80. All meals include a 12.5% service charge - for two this can be a much as a good takeway!!!! All in all a great three days. Issue can be with limited car parking. We arrived at 3pm and found only two empty spaces.

Room Tip: We had a ground floor room facing the enclosed garden - very nice. Some ground floor and first floor...

I love old hotels, but this does sometimes mean having to make a few compromises either in terms of facilities or character. It's a rare hotel that can keep all of the charm of an older building and combine that with the comfort of a modern hotel, and that is what the management of The Old Parsonage seem to have achieved.

The Old Parsonage is a delight. We chose the hotel based on it's location and the reviews here on Trip Advisor and used it for a quick anniversary break. The building seeps character and has been stylishly brought up to date inside without compromising the charm of the building.

However, whilst the setting was fantastic, it was the staff that stood out for us. Every one greeted us with a smiling face and a polite welcome whenever we saw them. No exceptions and no "forced grins". We were left with the feeling of a friendly work force proud to work in a good hotel. Quite right too.

Some of the reviews that we red prior to our stay mentioned small breakfasts. I am far from a light eater and I have to say that what I was served was more than adequate. I'm not sure whether the other reviewers were hungrier than I, or whether breakfast portions have changed - however the cooked element filled me up quite happily without me tackling the continental spread.

I realise that this review is glowing in a way that makes me sound far less fussy and grumpy than I generally am. However I am really struggling to offer even the most constructive criticism. In fact the only negative that I can think of is that the room was not particularly large. However by the standards of an older hotel even that was actually not bad at all!

The old parsonage does not pretend but you are welcome with warmth and all through your stay , you feel at home. Pets are allowed which is a great relief for ma y of us. Once a week there is a jazz eve and you can dine either by the chimney or in the more formal dining room.
If you have a chance to stay in Oxford , try to sleep there. Near the city, walking distance, buses nearby, but also peace and quiet. Maybe because of its history!

A lovely hotel in a fabulous location with excellent service. We've made several visits to celebrate special birthdays and other occasions and always had a wonderful time. We always try to eat in the restaurant where the food is delicious and the staff make you feel incredibly well looked after. Highly recommended!

This is a very lovely, old, luxurious and exquistely maintained small hotel not five mintues walk from the centre of Oxford, interesting little shops, pubs, the river, museums, botanic garden and all the colleges. My room was very quiet, comfortable and the dining accommodations are cozy with an excellent menu and wine list. I do suggest Evensong service at the lovely Gothic church next to the hotel even if you are not a "believer". It is a truely English experience ... choirboys 'n all. I have no reservations in recommending this hotel. If driving you will find the parking rather limited and the only other problem you will be confronted with is the maze of one way streets in downtown Oxford that can confound even the most astute.
